KISSIMMEE, FL. The week of August 6, inspectors working the tourist corridor from Kissimmee to International Drive cited 12 restaurants for high-severity violations, including unapproved food sources, employees not reporting illness, and food contact surfaces that were not properly cleaned or sanitized.
The Violations
Spicy Girl on International Drive drew the highest count of the week: 12 high-severity violations and 6 intermediate. Inspectors cited the restaurant for food from unapproved or unknown sources, no employee health policy, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, and food contact surfaces that were not properly cleaned or sanitized. No person in charge was present or performing duties during the visit.
Red Lobster #0108 at 5936 International Drive followed with 10 high-severity violations. The seafood chain was cited for inadequate shell stock identification, failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. An employee was cited for not reporting illness symptoms.
Sickies Burgers and Brews at 11701 International Drive also drew 10 high-severity violations. Rock and Brews at 6897 South Semoran Boulevard also accumulated 9 high-severity violations. The citation list included inadequate handwashing facilities, food from unapproved sources, failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, and no consumer advisory. No person in charge was present or performing duties.
Moa Kai Diner on East Colonial Drive drew 8 high-severity violations, among them inadequate shell stock identification, parasite destruction procedures not followed, food from unapproved sources, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled near food.
Osaka Bay Buffet at 7598 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, located along the primary tourist corridor into Kissimmee, was cited for 8 high-severity violations. Inspectors found no person in charge, no employee health policy, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food from unapproved sources, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, no consumer advisory, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.
Jack and Mary's Restaurant on South Goldenrod Road was cited for 8 high-severity violations including food from unapproved sources, inadequate shell stock identification, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff.
Juicy Crab at 7308 International Drive drew 4 high-severity violations, including food not cooked to minimum temperature, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and an employee not reporting illness symptoms. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for improper sewage or wastewater disposal, an intermediate violation.
Hong Kong Alley Kitchen at 10663 East Colonial Drive was cited for 7 high-severity violations. Those included food in poor condition or adulterated, parasite destruction procedures not followed, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and no allergen awareness demonstrated. Inspectors also noted single-use items being improperly reused.
Yummi at 1937 South Alafaya Trail drew 7 high-severity violations including no person in charge, time as a public health control not properly used, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and improper sewage or wastewater disposal as an intermediate violation.
Mia's Italian Kitchen at 8717 International Drive rounded out the list with 7 high-severity violations: no person in charge, inadequate shell stock identification, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, time as a public health control not properly used, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.
What These Violations Mean
The most common high-severity violation this week, appearing at nine of the twelve cited facilities, was an employee not reporting symptoms of illness. This is not a paperwork problem. A single sick food worker handling ready-to-eat food is the most direct transmission route for Norovirus, which causes 20 million illnesses in the United States annually. The facilities where this was cited include Red Lobster, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Osaka Bay Buffet, Spicy Girl, and Juicy Crab, all of them on or immediately adjacent to the tourist corridor.
Food from unapproved or unknown sources was documented at seven facilities this week, including Spicy Girl, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Rock and Brews, Pesaros Pizza, Moa Kai Diner, Osaka Bay Buffet, and Jack and Mary's. When food enters a kitchen without passing through a licensed, inspected supplier, there is no traceability. If a customer gets sick, investigators cannot identify the source. That matters in a tourist corridor where the sick person may be on a plane home before symptoms appear.
Inadequate shell stock identification appeared at four facilities: Spicy Girl, Red Lobster, Moa Kai Diner, Jack and Mary's, and Mia's Italian Kitchen. Shellfish, including oysters, clams, and mussels, are frequently consumed raw or lightly cooked. Without proper tagging records, a facility cannot identify where its shellfish came from if an illness cluster is reported.
Toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled appeared at six facilities this week, including Moa Kai Diner, Osaka Bay Buffet, Juicy Crab, Jack and Mary's, Hong Kong Alley Kitchen, and Yummi. Chemical contamination from unlabeled or misplaced cleaning products is not a gradual risk. It is acute. A mislabeled container used in food preparation can cause poisoning the same day.
The Longer Record
The data does not include prior inspection counts for the facilities cited this week, which limits the ability to place this week's findings against each restaurant's full history. What the violation records do show, without that context, is a corridor where the same categories of failure appeared repeatedly within a single inspection window.
Five facilities were cited simultaneously for both no person in charge and employee illness reporting failures: Spicy Girl, Pesaros Pizza, Rock and Brews, Osaka Bay Buffet, and Mia's Italian Kitchen. The combination is significant. Management absence correlates with cascading violations because there is no one present to enforce the health policy that, in many of these cases, does not exist in written form anyway.
Three International Drive restaurants, Spicy Girl, Red Lobster, and Sickies Burgers and Brews, collectively drew 32 high-severity violations in a single week. All three are positioned within a roughly six-mile stretch of road that draws millions of visitors annually, many of them families with children, elderly travelers, and tourists from outside the country who have no mechanism for checking Florida inspection records before they walk in.
Osaka Bay Buffet on West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway sits at the Kissimmee gateway to the theme park corridor. Its citation for no employee health policy, no person in charge, and food from unapproved sources arrived during one of the heaviest tourist weeks of the Florida summer.
