KISSIMMEE, FL. The busiest tourist week of August brought state inspectors through a dozen Orlando-area restaurants along and near International Drive, and what they found ranged from food pulled from unapproved sources to employees who had no idea they were supposed to report being sick.

Spicy Girl on International Drive drew the most serious inspection of the week, with 12 high-severity violations and 6 intermediate citations. Inspectors found no qualified person in charge present or performing duties, no written employee health policy, and at least one employee who had not reported illness symptoms as required. Food was traced to unapproved or unknown sources, and shellfish records were inadequate to trace product back to its harvest origin.

Food contact surfaces at Spicy Girl were not properly cleaned or sanitized, and the facility was using time as a public health control without following the required procedures. Inspectors also cited improper handwashing technique, meaning workers were making handwashing attempts but leaving pathogens on their hands.

Red Lobster #0108 at 5936 International Drive, steps from the tourist hotel corridor, accumulated 10 high-severity violations. Inspectors found that food was not being cooked to required minimum temperatures, that parasite destruction procedures for fish were not being followed, and that no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods was posted. Shellfish traceability records were also inadequate.

Sickies Burgers and Brews at 11701 International Drive matched Red Lobster's tally with 10 high-severity violations of its own. The restaurant had no written employee health policy, no consumer advisory for undercooked items, food from unapproved sources, and documented failures in both food cooking temperatures and parasite destruction. Improper handwashing technique was also cited.

Pesaros Pizza at 3464 Avalon Park East Boulevard recorded 9 high-severity violations. No person in charge was present or performing duties, employees were not reporting illness symptoms, food was coming from unapproved sources, and cooking temperatures were not meeting minimums. Time as a public health control was also misused.

Persis Indian Grill at 5931 International Drive also drew 9 high-severity violations. Inspectors cited inadequate shell stock identification, food not cooked to minimum temperature, improper use of time as a public health control, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled near food.

The Rest of the List

Moa Kai Diner at 2217 East Colonial Drive received 8 high-severity violations, including food from unapproved sources, inadequate shellfish traceability, parasite destruction failures, and improperly stored toxic chemicals. No consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods was in place.

Pollos a la Brasa Pio Pio at 2259 South Semoran Boulevard was cited for 8 high-severity violations as well, including food described as in poor condition, mislabeled, or adulterated, food from unapproved sources, and toxic chemicals improperly stored. No employee illness reporting policy was in place and no consumer advisory was posted.

Dixie Belles Cafe at 7125 South Orange Avenue drew 8 high-severity violations. The inspection record shows both inadequate handwashing and improper handwashing technique cited as separate violations, meaning inspectors found workers not washing at all and also washing incorrectly. The cafe also had no allergen awareness demonstrated, a violation that carries direct risk of anaphylaxis for the 32 million Americans with food allergies.

Wing Shack at 4650 Michigan Street recorded 8 high-severity violations, including food in poor condition or mislabeled, inadequate shellfish records, improperly stored toxic chemicals, and a separate citation for toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used. Both chemical violations appearing together signals a facility where cleaning and sanitizing products are not being managed at a basic level.

Sazoncito Latin Food at 4542 South Semoran Boulevard had 6 high-severity violations, including food from unapproved sources, improperly stored chemicals, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also noted improper sewage or wastewater disposal, a condition that creates risk of fecal contamination throughout a facility.

Juicy Crab at 7308 International Drive drew 4 high-severity violations, including food not cooked to required minimum temperatures and improperly stored toxic chemicals. Inspectors also cited improper sewage or wastewater disposal and improperly cleaned multi-use utensils.

Juicy Bites at 12125 Apopka Vineland Road had the lightest record of the week, with 1 high-severity violation for improperly cleaned food contact surfaces and 1 intermediate citation for inadequate ventilation and lighting.

What These Violations Mean

The employee illness violations at Spicy Girl, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Red Lobster, Pollos a la Brasa Pio Pio, Dixie Belles Cafe, and Pesaros Pizza are not paperwork failures. They describe conditions where a worker with Norovirus or Salmonella has no obligation, formal or understood, to stay out of the kitchen. Norovirus spreads through food handled by infected workers and causes illness in as few as 10 viral particles, a dose easily transferred from unwashed hands to a plate.

The food-from-unapproved-sources citations at Spicy Girl, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Pesaros Pizza, Moa Kai Diner, Sazoncito Latin Food, and Pollos a la Brasa Pio Pio carry a specific risk that gets overlooked. When food enters a restaurant through channels that bypass USDA or FDA inspection, there is no supply chain record if someone gets sick. Investigators tracing a Listeria or Salmonella outbreak need lot numbers and distributor records. Unapproved-source food has neither.

Parasite destruction failures at Red Lobster, Sickies Burgers and Brews, and Moa Kai Diner are particularly concerning in a tourist market where visitors are ordering fish dishes without knowing the preparation backstory. Fish served raw or lightly cooked, including sushi-style preparations and ceviche, must be frozen to specific temperatures for specific durations to kill parasites like Anisakis. Skipping that step does not change how the dish looks or tastes.

The sewage disposal violations at Sazoncito Latin Food and Juicy Crab represent the most immediate contamination risk of any violation type on this list. Wastewater that does not leave a facility through proper channels can back up into food prep areas, creating direct fecal contamination of surfaces and equipment.

The Longer Record

Several of the facilities flagged this week sit in locations that have accumulated substantial inspection histories, which means this week's findings are part of a documented pattern rather than a one-time surprise. Red Lobster on International Drive is a long-operating chain location in one of the highest-traffic tourist zones in the country, drawing families with children and elderly visitors year-round, exactly the populations most vulnerable to undercooking and illness-transmission violations.

The International Drive corridor accounts for five of the twelve facilities cited this week: Spicy Girl, Red Lobster, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Persis Indian Grill, and Juicy Crab. That concentration in a single tourist-facing corridor, where foot traffic peaks in August and diners are largely visitors without local knowledge of restaurant reputations, is the defining context for this week's inspection data.

Pollos a la Brasa Pio Pio was cited for food in poor condition alongside food from unapproved sources, a pairing that suggests the supply chain problem may not be limited to sourcing paperwork. Wing Shack drew two separate chemical-storage violations in the same inspection, meaning inspectors found toxic substances improperly stored and separately found toxic substances improperly identified or used, two distinct failures in the same category at the same facility on the same visit.

Dixie Belles Cafe on South Orange Avenue remains the only facility this week cited for no allergen awareness, a violation that carries consequences no other citation on this list does: a customer with a severe peanut or shellfish allergy who asks the right questions and gets the wrong answer because staff have not been trained.
