FORT MYERS, FL. Inspectors cited Fancy's Southern Cafe on Salrose Lane for six high-severity violations during the week of September 11, including employees not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces that were not properly cleaned or sanitized, and toxic chemicals stored improperly near food prep areas.

That was one of fifteen Fort Myers restaurants that drew high-severity citations in a single week, a stretch that exposed systemic problems with employee illness policies, food sourcing, and chemical storage across the city.

Bimini Bait Shack on Harbour Pointe Drive matched Fancy's with six high-severity violations of its own, and several were among the most serious documented this week. Inspectors cited the restaurant for obtaining food from an unapproved or unknown source, failing to cook food to required minimum temperatures, and having no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked items.

Bimini also drew citations for employees not reporting illness symptoms and for improper handwashing technique, alongside improperly stored toxic chemicals. That combination, a restaurant sourcing food outside the regulated supply chain while also failing on illness reporting, is the profile inspectors associate with outbreak risk.

Italian 2 Go LLC on Corporate Court also accumulated six high-severity violations. Inspectors found food from an unapproved or unknown source, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and no demonstrated allergen awareness. The facility also lacked an adequate employee health policy.

Morning Blooms LLC on Daniels Parkway drew six high-severity violations with a notably specific combination: inadequate shell stock identification records, meaning inspectors could not verify where the shellfish on hand had originated, alongside food in poor condition and improper use of time as a public health control.

Shell Point Village Palm Grill on Woodsong Lane was cited for five high-severity violations. The person in charge was not present or not performing required duties during the inspection. Inspectors also found no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, food from an unapproved source, and food not cooked to minimum required temperatures.

Shell Point Village is a retirement community. The presence of those violations at a facility serving an elderly population is notable: the CDC identifies adults 65 and older as among the groups most likely to be hospitalized from foodborne illness.

Resurgence Brewing Company on Exchange Lane was cited for five high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved source, inadequate shell stock identification, food not cooked to required temperatures, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items, and improperly stored toxic chemicals.

Citrola's Italian Grill on McGregor Boulevard drew four high-severity violations, including no person in charge present, no employee health policy, food from an unapproved source, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.

Perkins Restaurant and Bakery on South Tamiami Trail was cited for four high-severity violations, including improper handwashing technique, inadequate shell stock identification, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.

Mellow Mushroom on Daniels Parkway drew four high-severity violations: employees not reporting illness symptoms, food not cooked to required temperatures, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and improperly stored toxic chemicals.

Taco Vazquez Inc on South Tamiami Trail was cited for four high-severity violations, including improper handwashing technique, improperly identified or stored toxic substances, no allergen awareness, and failure to follow required procedures for specialized food processes.

Oar and Iron on Dani Drive drew four high-severity violations: improper handwashing technique, food from an unapproved source, food not cooked to required minimum temperatures, and improperly identified or stored toxic substances.

Twisted Crab Seafood and Bar on Cleveland Avenue was cited for four high-severity violations, including no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, food in poor condition, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized.

Leeman Holdings Group LLC on Fowler Street drew four high-severity violations, two of them related to toxic substances: improperly stored or labeled toxic chemicals and improperly identified or stored toxic substances. Inspectors also cited employees for not reporting illness symptoms and found no allergen awareness demonstrated.

Hasan Restaurant on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was cited for four high-severity violations: improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and no allergen awareness demonstrated.

Breakfast Bros NY Cafe on Metro Parkway drew the week's lowest tally among flagged facilities, one high-severity violation for food in poor condition, mislabeled, or adulterated, alongside an intermediate citation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal.

What These Violations Mean

The most frequently cited high-severity violation this week was the combination of no employee health policy and employees not reporting illness symptoms. Those two citations appeared together at Fancy's Southern Cafe, Bimini Bait Shack, Morning Blooms, Shell Point Village Palm Grill, Twisted Crab Seafood and Bar, and Mellow Mushroom. Without a written policy requiring sick workers to stay home, and without workers actually following that protocol, a single employee with Norovirus can expose dozens or hundreds of customers before anyone identifies a problem.

Food from unapproved or unknown sources was cited at Bimini Bait Shack, Italian 2 Go, Morning Blooms, Shell Point Village Palm Grill, Citrola's Italian Grill, Resurgence Brewing Company, and Oar and Iron. The practical consequence is traceability. When a customer becomes ill and investigators try to identify the source, food that entered the kitchen outside the licensed supply chain cannot be traced back to a farm, a processor, or a distributor. An outbreak linked to unapproved-source food is harder to contain and harder to stop.

Shell stock identification failures at Morning Blooms, Resurgence Brewing Company, and Perkins Restaurant and Bakery carry the same traceability problem in a higher-risk category. Shellfish are frequently consumed raw or lightly cooked, and they filter large volumes of water, concentrating bacteria and viruses. The required harvest tags exist specifically so that a batch of contaminated oysters can be recalled before more people are sickened.

Toxic chemical violations appeared at seven facilities this week, including Fancy's Southern Cafe, Bimini Bait Shack, Perkins, Mellow Mushroom, Leeman Holdings Group, and Hasan Restaurant. Cleaning chemicals stored near or above food prep surfaces can contaminate food directly, and mislabeled containers create the risk that a worker uses the wrong substance on a food contact surface.

The Longer Record

Leeman Holdings Group on Fowler Street has 44 prior inspections on record, the longest history of any facility in this week's report. This week's four high-severity violations, including two separate toxic substance citations, come against that extended backdrop.

Italian 2 Go on Corporate Court has 38 prior inspections on record and drew six high-severity violations this week, including food from an unapproved source and no allergen awareness. Fancy's Southern Cafe has 33 prior inspections and again drew six high-severity violations, including the same handwashing and illness-reporting failures that have appeared in prior inspection categories at similar facilities.

Taco Vazquez Inc has 32 prior inspections on record. The four high-severity violations documented this week, including failure to follow required procedures for specialized food processes, indicate that experience in the inspection system has not resolved the facility's most serious compliance gaps.

Resurgence Brewing Company, by contrast, has only 2 prior inspections on record, making it among the newest facilities in this week's report. It drew five high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved source, inadequate shell stock identification, undercooked food, no consumer advisory, and improperly stored toxic chemicals. Oar and Iron, with 6 prior inspections, similarly drew four high-severity violations early in its inspection history.

Whether Resurgence Brewing Company, which had no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked items despite serving shellfish, has corrected that citation is not reflected in this week's records.
