FORT MYERS, FL. Saucy Meatball on Commerce Lakes Drive drew seven high-severity violations in a single inspection during the week of September 8, the most of any restaurant flagged by state inspectors across Fort Myers that week, with citations ranging from improperly stored toxic chemicals to missing shellfish traceability records to an employee who failed to report illness symptoms.

Fourteen other Fort Myers restaurants collected high-severity violations during the same seven-day stretch, bringing the week's total to 15 facilities with serious citations across Lee County.

At Saucy Meatball, the person in charge was cited as either absent or not performing duties during the inspection, a condition that state data consistently links to higher rates of critical violations across a facility. The same inspection found that an employee had failed to report illness symptoms, that time was being used as a public health control without proper documentation, and that no consumer advisory was posted for raw or undercooked menu items.

Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2 on Colonial Boulevard collected six high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved or unknown source and a failure to follow parasite destruction procedures for fish. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for food in poor condition and no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. An improper sewage or wastewater disposal citation rounded out a list that signals failures at nearly every stage of food handling.

Italian 2 Go LLC on Corporate Court also drew six high-severity violations. Inspectors found food from an unapproved source, no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, unsanitized food contact surfaces, no consumer advisory, and no allergen awareness. The facility also lacked adequate cooling equipment, a finding that compounds the risk from the sourcing and sanitation failures documented in the same visit.

Wok Cuisine Chinese Restaurant on Boy Scout Drive was cited for five high-severity violations, including toxic substances improperly stored or used, no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, and no allergen awareness. Inspectors also noted multi-use utensils not properly cleaned and inadequate toilet facilities.

Resurgence Brewing Company on Exchange Lane drew five high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved source, inadequate shellfish identification records, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items.

Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill on Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard was cited for five high-severity violations, including the absence of a person in charge performing duties, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, unsanitized food contact surfaces, and improper use of time as a public health control.

Oar and Iron on Dani Drive drew four high-severity violations, among them food from an unapproved source, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, improper handwashing technique, and toxic substances improperly stored. Inspectors also noted improper sewage or wastewater disposal.

J&C Crab Seafood Restaurant on 6 Mile Cypress Parkway collected four high-severity violations: no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, food from an unapproved source, and toxic substances improperly stored. The facility was also cited for inadequate cooling equipment.

Mr. Tequila on Summerlin Road drew three high-severity violations, including an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food from an unapproved source, and inadequate shellfish identification records. Inspectors also found improper sewage disposal and improperly used sanitizing solutions.

Banh Mi and Tea Inc. on 6 Mile Cypress Parkway was cited for improper handwashing technique, unsanitized food contact surfaces, and no allergen awareness demonstrated. Inspectors also flagged equipment in poor repair.

Grand Court on College Parkway drew three high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved source, inadequate shellfish identification records, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items.

Snappers Comedy Club on College Parkway was cited for improperly stored toxic chemicals, improper use of time as a public health control, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.

Ceviches by Divino on Dani Drive drew three high-severity violations, including no employee health policy, unsanitized food contact surfaces, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also noted improper sewage or wastewater disposal, a significant citation for a restaurant whose menu centers on raw seafood.

Beaches Boardwalk Cafe at Southwest Florida International Airport was cited for toxic chemicals improperly stored, improper use of time as a public health control, and no allergen awareness demonstrated.

Paris Banh Mi on Dani Drive drew a single high-severity citation for failing to follow required procedures for specialized food processes, a violation that applies to techniques such as curing, fermenting, or reduced-oxygen packaging.

What These Violations Mean

The most widespread high-severity violation this week was food from an unapproved or unknown source, cited at Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2, Italian 2 Go LLC, Resurgence Brewing Company, Oar and Iron, J&C Crab Seafood Restaurant, Mr. Tequila, and Grand Court. When food enters a restaurant through an uninspected channel, there is no traceability if a customer gets sick. If an outbreak occurs, investigators cannot identify the source, recall the product, or determine how many people were exposed. The risk is not theoretical: Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli have all been traced to uninspected supply chains.

Shellfish traceability failures at Saucy Meatball, Resurgence Brewing Company, Mr. Tequila, and Grand Court compound that risk specifically for oysters, clams, and mussels, which are often consumed raw or barely cooked. Shellfish are filter feeders that concentrate whatever pathogens are present in the water they were harvested from. Without harvest tags and dealer records, there is no way to link a sick customer to a contaminated harvest bed.

The employee illness reporting failures at Saucy Meatball and Mr. Tequila represent a direct transmission route. Norovirus, the most common cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in restaurant settings, spreads person-to-person through contaminated food prepared by a sick worker. A written health policy is the mechanism that gives employees permission to stay home without penalty, and without one, sick workers have little incentive to report.

Toxic chemical storage violations at Saucy Meatball, Resurgence Brewing Company, Wok Cuisine, Oar and Iron, J&C Crab, Snappers Comedy Club, and Beaches Boardwalk Cafe are not paperwork problems. Cleaning chemicals stored above or near food, or in unlabeled containers, can contaminate a meal directly. The acute symptoms of chemical poisoning, including vomiting and respiratory distress, can appear within minutes of ingestion and are frequently misdiagnosed as foodborne illness.

The Longer Record

Italian 2 Go LLC has 38 prior inspections on record, the longest history of any facility featured this week. Six high-severity violations in the most recent visit, including food from an unapproved source and no employee health policy, suggest that a lengthy inspection history has not produced consistent compliance. Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill, with 33 prior inspections, and Wok Cuisine Chinese Restaurant, with 30, show similar patterns: facilities that have been through the inspection cycle many times and still drew multiple serious citations this week.

Saucy Meatball's 21 prior inspections make its seven-violation week harder to explain as a one-time lapse. Grand Court, with 24 inspections on record, and Snappers Comedy Club, with 26, each drew three high-severity violations, including citations for food sourcing and chemical storage that are not new categories of concern for facilities with those inspection totals.

Four facilities inspected this week had two prior inspections on record, meaning they are effectively new to the inspection cycle. Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2 and Resurgence Brewing Company each drew five or six high-severity violations in what amounts to an early inspection, a significant accumulation for facilities that have had little time to establish compliance patterns. Mr. Tequila, also with two prior inspections, drew three high-severity violations including an employee illness reporting failure.

Ceviches by Divino, which serves raw seafood and drew an improper sewage disposal citation alongside three high-severity violations, has 17 prior inspections on record. The sewage citation at a raw-seafood establishment was unresolved at the time the inspection report was filed.
