FORT MYERS, FL. Saucy Meatball on Commerce Lakes Drive drew seven high-severity violations during a single inspection this week, the highest count of any Fort Myers restaurant in the September 7 through September 13 inspection period, with citations covering toxic chemical storage near food, no system for employees to report illness symptoms, missing shellfish traceability records, improperly sanitized food contact surfaces, and no consumer advisory warning diners about raw or undercooked items on the menu.
That was one restaurant. Fourteen others in Fort Myers also received high-severity citations during the same seven-day stretch.
The Violations
Italian 2 Go LLC on Corporate Court followed with six high-severity violations, including food sourced from an unapproved or unknown supplier, no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff, no consumer advisory for raw foods, and improper handwashing technique observed during the inspection. The facility also lacked an adequate employee health policy and had improperly cleaned food contact surfaces.
Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2 on Colonial Boulevard matched that count with six high-severity citations of its own, including food in poor condition or adulterated, failure to follow parasite destruction procedures for fish or meat, food from an unapproved source, and no allergen awareness. Inspectors also documented improper sewage or wastewater disposal at the location.
Wok Cuisine Chinese Restaurant on Boy Scout Drive received five high-severity violations, among them toxic substances improperly stored or used, no allergen awareness, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items, and improper handwashing technique. The facility had no written employee health policy.
Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill on Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard also drew five high-severity citations. Inspectors found no person in charge present or performing duties during the visit, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and a failure to properly use time as a public health control.
Resurgence Brewing Company on Exchange Lane rounded out the five-violation tier, with citations for food from an unapproved source, missing shellfish identification records, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, no consumer advisory, and toxic chemicals stored or labeled improperly.
Oar and Iron on Dani Drive drew four high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved source, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, improper handwashing technique, and toxic substances improperly stored or used. Inspectors also noted improper sewage or wastewater disposal.
J&C Crab Seafood Restaurant on Six Mile Cypress Parkway received four high-severity citations: no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, food from an unapproved or unknown source, and toxic substances improperly stored or used. The facility also had inadequate cold holding equipment, an intermediate violation.
The Pattern
Several violations repeated across multiple facilities this week, and that repetition is itself a finding.
Food from unapproved or unknown sources appeared at five separate restaurants: Italian 2 Go, Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2, Resurgence Brewing Company, Oar and Iron, and J&C Crab Seafood. Improper handwashing technique was documented at six facilities: Italian 2 Go, Wok Cuisine, Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill, Oar and Iron, J&C Crab Seafood, and Banh Mi and Tea Inc on Six Mile Cypress Parkway. No consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods appeared at seven locations across the week.
Snappers Comedy Club on College Parkway was cited for improper use of time as a public health control, no consumer advisory, and toxic chemicals stored or labeled improperly. Grand Court Fort Myers on College Parkway drew citations for food from an unapproved source, missing shellfish identification records, and no consumer advisory. Ceviches by Divino on Dani Drive received three high-severity violations including no employee health policy, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, no consumer advisory, and a separate citation for improper sewage disposal.
Keke's Breakfast Cafe on Dani Drive was cited for employees not reporting illness symptoms, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, and toxic substances improperly stored or used. Tijuana Flats Burrito Co on South Cleveland Avenue drew three citations: failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and toxic chemicals stored or labeled improperly. Paris Banh Mi on Dani Drive received a single high-severity citation for failing to follow required procedures for specialized food processes.
What These Violations Mean
The food-from-unapproved-source violation, documented at five Fort Myers restaurants this week, carries a specific danger that goes beyond the food itself. When a supplier is not registered with or inspected by state or federal authorities, there is no traceability chain. If a customer gets sick after eating at Italian 2 Go, Resurgence Brewing Company, or J&C Crab Seafood, investigators cannot follow the food backward to its origin. Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli have all entered restaurant supply chains through uninspected sources.
Shellfish violations at Saucy Meatball, Resurgence Brewing Company, and Grand Court Fort Myers compound that traceability problem. Oysters, clams, and mussels are frequently consumed raw or lightly cooked, and they filter large volumes of water, concentrating whatever pathogens or toxins are present. Shellfish tags are the only mechanism that allows public health officials to identify a harvest source if an outbreak occurs. Without those records, there is no way to pull product or warn other consumers.
The no-consumer-advisory citation, which appeared at seven facilities this week, is not a paperwork technicality. It is the only mechanism by which a pregnant woman, an elderly diner, or someone on immunosuppressive medication learns that a dish contains raw or undercooked protein. At Ceviches by Divino, which serves ceviche by design, the absence of that advisory is particularly direct. Ceviche is acid-marinated, not heat-cooked, and the distinction matters for anyone whose immune system cannot clear a pathogen on its own.
Improper handwashing technique, documented at six facilities, is distinct from simply not washing hands. It means inspectors observed employees make a handwashing attempt that left pathogens on their hands. At Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill, that citation appeared alongside a separate citation for inadequate handwashing facilities, meaning the infrastructure to wash properly was itself deficient. Both violations at the same location remove the basic barrier between kitchen contamination and the plate.
The Longer Record
Italian 2 Go on Corporate Court has 38 prior inspections on record, the highest count of any facility cited this week. Six high-severity violations at a location with that many prior inspections is a different finding than six violations at a new restaurant still learning its systems. The inspection history does not show what those prior visits found, but the volume of contact between state inspectors and this facility is established.
Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill carries 33 prior inspections, and Wok Cuisine Chinese Restaurant has 30. Tijuana Flats Burrito Co has 27, Snappers Comedy Club 26, and Grand Court Fort Myers 24. Saucy Meatball, which led all facilities this week with seven high-severity violations, has 21 prior inspections on record.
Two facilities this week are effectively new to the inspection record. Las Hermanas Pizzeria 2 on Colonial Boulevard had only 2 prior inspections before this week's visit, yet inspectors documented six high-severity violations including parasite destruction failures, food in poor condition, and improper sewage disposal. Resurgence Brewing Company on Exchange Lane also had just 2 prior inspections and drew five high-severity citations, including food not cooked to minimum temperature and missing shellfish records.
Oar and Iron on Dani Drive had 6 prior inspections and Paris Banh Mi had 6, placing both in the early stage of their inspection histories. Oar and Iron's four high-severity violations, including undercooked food and improper sewage disposal, represent a significant accumulation for a facility that has been inspected fewer than ten times.
Saucy Meatball's seven high-severity violations this week included a citation for an employee not reporting illness symptoms, a finding that state records show was not resolved during the inspection period.
