FORT MYERS, FL. Speckled Egg on McGregor Boulevard and McGregor Pizza Company on South Tamiami Trail each accumulated eight high-severity violations during the week of July 16, the highest totals among 15 Fort Myers restaurants cited for serious food safety failures in a single seven-day stretch.
The same day inspectors were working through those two facilities, state records show two other restaurants were emergency-closed on July 16. Cactus Truck #2 at 4760 S. Cleveland Ave. was shut down for having no potable water. El Estadio Latin Sports Bar at 11491 S. Cleveland Ave. was closed the same day for fly activity.
The Worst of the Week
At Speckled Egg, inspectors documented eight high-severity violations covering a wide range of hazards. Among them: parasite destruction procedures not followed, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and no allergen awareness demonstrated. The facility also drew a citation for failing to use time as a public health control properly, meaning food sat in the temperature danger zone without adequate tracking.
McGregor Pizza Company drew an identical count of eight high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved or unknown source, inadequate shell stock identification records, and food not cooked to the required minimum temperature. The restaurant also had no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked foods and showed no allergen awareness.
El Local on South Tamiami Trail drew seven high-severity citations, including food from an unapproved source and inadequate shell stock records alongside improper handwashing technique and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.
Three other restaurants each recorded seven high-severity violations. No 1 Wok on Summerlin Road was cited for inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, parasite destruction failures, and no allergen awareness. Super Wok on South Tamiami Trail drew citations for food from an unapproved source, inadequate handwashing facilities, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no consumer advisory. New Tasty Wok on South Pointe Boulevard was cited for inadequate handwashing facilities, improper technique, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no allergen awareness.
Pho 99 on Boy Scout Drive accumulated six high-severity violations, including two separate chemical-handling citations: toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used. The facility also had improper sewage or wastewater disposal flagged at the intermediate level.
Lis China King on Dani Drive drew five high-severity violations, including food in poor condition, mislabeled, or adulterated, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and improper sewage or wastewater disposal at the intermediate level.
The Rest of the Week's Findings
Shoeless Joe's Sports Cafe on Bell Tower Drive recorded five high-severity violations, including an employee not reporting symptoms of illness, improper handwashing technique, and no allergen awareness. The facility also lacked a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.
Gametime on Gulf Center Drive drew five high-severity citations, among them food from an unapproved source, toxic substances improperly identified or used, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also flagged improper sewage or wastewater disposal at the intermediate level.
Lazy Flamingo 4 on McGregor Boulevard had four high-severity violations, including inadequate shell stock identification records, no consumer advisory, and no allergen awareness, plus four intermediate violations covering sewage disposal, improperly cleaned utensils, sanitizer procedures, and toilet facilities.
Vuelve a la Vida Seafood Restaurant on Boy Scout Drive was cited for four high-severity violations, including no employee health policy, improper handwashing, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, and no allergen awareness.
Dave's Hot Chicken on Dani Drive drew four high-severity violations, including an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.
McDonald's at 14551 SR 80 was cited for four high-severity violations with no intermediate violations, including food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, parasite destruction procedures not followed, and no allergen awareness.
Krab Hut House on South Cleveland Avenue recorded three high-severity violations alongside four intermediate citations, including improper sewage disposal, improperly maintained toilet facilities, and equipment in poor repair.
What These Violations Mean
The most dangerous pattern this week cuts across nearly every facility on the list: employees not reporting illness symptoms, combined with inadequate or improperly executed handwashing. At Speckled Egg, El Local, Shoeless Joe's, Lis China King, Dave's Hot Chicken, McDonald's, and Krab Hut House, inspectors documented one or both of these failures. When a sick food worker does not report symptoms and also does not wash hands correctly, the transmission path for Norovirus to dozens of customers is direct and short.
Food from unapproved or unknown sources, cited at McGregor Pizza Company, El Local, Super Wok, and Gametime, carries a specific traceability problem. If a customer becomes ill, investigators cannot trace the food back to its origin, identify a contaminated lot, or issue a recall. Unapproved sources also bypass federal inspection systems designed to screen for Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli before product reaches a kitchen.
The chemical violations at Super Wok, New Tasty Wok, and Pho 99 are not administrative oversights. Cleaning chemicals stored near or above food preparation surfaces can contaminate food directly. At Pho 99, inspectors wrote two separate chemical-handling citations in the same visit, one for improper storage and labeling and one for improper identification and use.
Parasite destruction failures, documented at Speckled Egg, McGregor Pizza Company, No 1 Wok, and McDonald's, mean that fish, pork, or other proteins subject to parasite risk were served without the freezing or cooking steps required to kill organisms like Anisakis in fish or Trichinella in pork. For a McDonald's location, the pairing of that citation with food not cooked to minimum temperature is notable: two separate pathogen-survival failures in a single inspection.
The Longer Record
Vuelve a la Vida Seafood Restaurant has 47 prior inspections on record, the highest count of any facility cited this week, and still drew four high-severity violations including no employee health policy and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned. Lazy Flamingo 4 carries 36 prior inspections. New Tasty Wok has 35. El Local has 33. Super Wok and Gametime each have 31. Speckled Egg has 31. These are not new restaurants encountering early growing pains.
El Local's 33-inspection history makes its shellfish traceability failure particularly hard to attribute to inexperience. Inspectors cited inadequate shell stock identification records, meaning oysters, clams, or mussels served at that facility cannot be traced if someone becomes ill. That is the same citation recorded this week at McGregor Pizza Company, El Local, and Lazy Flamingo 4, three separate facilities, three separate traceability gaps.
Dave's Hot Chicken on Dani Drive presents a different picture. With only two prior inspections on record, it is among the newest facilities in this week's data. Four high-severity violations, including an employee not reporting illness and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, in the first two inspections is a fast accumulation.
McDonald's at SR 80 has 17 prior inspections, the same count as McGregor Pizza Company. Both drew four or more high-severity violations this week. Lis China King, with 27 inspections on record, was cited this week for improper sewage disposal alongside food in poor condition and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, a combination that appeared in the same facility's record across a history that spans nearly three dozen visits.
Krab Hut House, with 21 prior inspections, is still carrying improper sewage disposal, inadequate toilet facilities, and equipment in poor repair as of this week's visit. Whether those specific citations have appeared in prior inspections at that address is not reflected in the available data.
