FLORIDA. A downtown Jacksonville sushi restaurant was shut down after state inspectors documented rodents, live roaches, and fly activity all at the same time, one of 44 pest-related emergency closures Florida regulators ordered across the state in the two weeks ending October 19, 2026.
The Closures
Pest-Related Emergency Closures by Type, Oct. 6-19, 2026
Kazu Sushi Burrito on West Adams Street in Jacksonville was closed October 13 after inspectors found rodent activity, live roaches, and flies present at the same time. The restaurant did not reopen until 11:11 a.m. the following morning, one of the longer turnaround times in this period.
That same day, two more Jacksonville restaurants were shut down. Fuji 3 on San Jose Boulevard was closed for roach activity and did not reopen until 4:18 p.m., more than a day after the initial order. Thai Cuisine and Noodle House, also on San Jose Boulevard, was closed October 7 for both roach and rodent activity, reopening the following morning.
Three Jacksonville closures in a single week is the kind of geographic concentration that stands out in statewide data.
Spring Hill produced two closures on the same day, October 15. Crafted Dessert Co. on Commercial Way was shut down for roach activity and reopened the next morning at 9:40 a.m. Breakfast Station on Northcliffe Boulevard was also closed that day for roaches, reopening at 8:24 a.m.
Tampa contributed three closures to the two-week total. Harpoon Harry's Crab House on South Franklin Street, a downtown waterfront staple, was closed October 6 for roach activity and did not reopen until 3:32 p.m. that afternoon. Riverview Fresh Cuisine on East Adamo Drive was shut down October 15 for a combination of roach and fly activity, reopening just after 9 a.m. the next day. Caribbean Sandwich Shop and Bakery on West Waters Avenue was closed October 13 for roaches, reopening at 2:49 p.m.
Rodents in Unexpected Places
Several of the rodent closures this period came from locations that might not immediately register as food-safety concerns.
Cypress Creek Golf Club in Sun City Center was closed October 14 for rodent activity, not reopening until 1:02 p.m. World Tennis Club in Naples was shut down October 7 for the same reason, reopening the following morning. The Grill at Stonegate Golf Club in Poinciana was closed October 7 for fly activity.
Three recreational venue kitchens closed for pest activity in the same two-week window.
Panhandlers in Santa Rosa Beach was closed October 6 for rodent activity, reopening at 10:49 a.m. Copp Winery and Brewery in Crystal River was shut down October 7 for rodents, not reopening until 3:25 p.m. Nawabi Hyderabad House Biryani Place in Lake Mary was closed the same day for both rodent and fly activity, reopening the following morning at 9:15 a.m.
Parched Oak on North Woodland Boulevard in Deland was closed October 14 for rodent activity, reopening early the next morning at 8:18 a.m. Broad St. Diner in Titusville was also closed October 14 for rodents, reopening at 8:09 a.m.
La Carreta Mia, operating out of Miami International Airport's Concourse D, was closed October 6 for both rodent and fly activity, reopening before 10 a.m. An airport concession serving travelers is among the more consequential locations in this dataset.
The Roach Cases
Roach activity drove more than half of all closures in this period, 25 of the 44 total, and it showed up in every corner of the state.
Wings and More on West Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale was closed October 14 for both roach and fly activity, reopening at 10:36 a.m. Denny's on West Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation was shut down the same day for roaches and flies, reopening before 9 a.m. the following morning.
China Spring III on Wiles Road in Coral Springs was closed October 8 for roach and rodent activity combined, reopening at 9:50 a.m. Tribute to Tobacco Road by Kush on South Miami Avenue was also closed October 8 for roaches and flies, reopening before 9 a.m.
Miami Shores Golf Club on Biscayne Boulevard was closed October 9 for both roach and rodent activity, reopening at 9:13 a.m.
Josie's Egg Station on Shepherd Road in Lakeland was closed October 12 for roaches, reopening at 11:49 a.m. No. 1 Jin Jin Kitchen on Ariana Street, also in Lakeland, was closed October 8 for roach activity, reopening at 12:37 p.m. Lakeland logged three total closures in this period.
Joey's Pizza on Seven Springs Boulevard in New Port Richey was closed October 13 for roaches, reopening the following morning at 8:54 a.m. Winghouse Bar and Grill on North Atlantic Avenue in Daytona Beach was shut down October 7, not reopening until 3:41 p.m.
Monkey Bar of Clearwater on Gulf to Bay Boulevard was closed October 15 for roach activity. Its reopening status was not available in state records as of the time of this report.
What These Violations Mean
Live roaches in a commercial kitchen are not a sanitation nuisance. They are a direct contamination pathway. Cockroaches move between sewage, garbage, and food preparation surfaces, depositing bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli along the way. When inspectors document live roach activity, the concern is not the insects themselves but what they have already touched and where they have already been.
Rodent activity carries a different and in some respects more serious risk profile. Rodent droppings can transmit Hantavirus, Salmonella, and Leptospirosis. Unlike roaches, rodents gnaw through food packaging, contaminating products that may look undisturbed. The closures at Cypress Creek Golf Club, Parched Oak, Broad St. Diner, and Rotis Indian Restaurant in Riverview all involved documented rodent activity, meaning inspectors found physical evidence, droppings, gnaw marks, or the animals themselves, before ordering those kitchens shut.
Fly activity, documented at 13 facilities this period either alone or alongside other pests, represents a third transmission route. Flies carry pathogens on their legs and bodies and deposit them on exposed food and food-contact surfaces. The closures at Ice Spot on South Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers and Keke's Breakfast Cafe in Parkland were triggered by fly activity alone, which inspectors treat as sufficient grounds for emergency closure when the infestation is active.
The most serious scenarios in this dataset are the multi-pest closures. Kazu Sushi Burrito in Jacksonville, Call Street Cafe in Starke, and Asian Fusion Buffet in Apollo Beach were all closed for three or two simultaneous pest types. A kitchen with concurrent roach, rodent, and fly activity is one where multiple contamination vectors are operating at the same time.
The Longer Record
Several facilities in this dataset carry inspection histories that put the October closures in a longer context. Bamboo Creek China Bistro in Palm Coast was closed October 6 for roach activity. Azul Tequila Mexican Restaurant in Arcadia was closed October 12 for rodents. Rotis Indian Restaurant in Riverview was closed the same day for rodent activity.
The Call Street Cafe in Starke, closed October 9 for rodents, roaches, and flies simultaneously, reopened at 8:10 a.m. the following morning. A facility that clears a three-pest emergency closure in under 24 hours raises a straightforward question: whether the conditions that produced the infestation were genuinely resolved or temporarily suppressed.
Gomez Mexican Grill on Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers was closed October 14 for roach activity, reopening at 9:20 a.m. the next day. Baci Beachside on Highway A1A in Satellite Beach was closed October 8 for both rodent and fly activity, reopening at 10:19 a.m.
The Monkey Bar of Clearwater, closed October 15 for roach activity, remained without a confirmed reopening in state records at the time this report was compiled.
