FLORIDA. A Dunkin location in Arcadia, a high-end steakhouse in Doral, and a golf club dining room in Naples were among 31 Florida food service establishments emergency-closed for pest activity during a two-week stretch in October, state records show. Roaches drove 19 of those closures. Rodents drove 9. Flies and combined infestations accounted for the rest.
The closures ran from October 5 through October 9, concentrated on October 7, when ten separate establishments were ordered shut in a single day across seven cities.
The Worst of the Week
Call Street Café at 111 Call St in Starke was the only establishment in this two-week period closed for all three pest types simultaneously: rodent activity, roach activity, and flies. Inspectors ordered it shut on October 9. It reopened the following morning at 8:10 a.m.
Miami Shores Golf Club at 10000 Biscayne Blvd was also closed October 9 for both roach and rodent activity, making it one of four establishments this period to draw a dual-pest closure. It reopened the same day at 9:13 a.m.
The dual-pest closures are the ones that stand out. China Spring III at 8100 Wiles Rd in Coral Springs was closed October 8 for roaches and rodents, reopening at 9:50 a.m. Thai Cuisine and Noodle House at 11701 San Jose Blvd in Jacksonville was closed October 7 for the same combination, reopening just before 10 a.m.
Unexpected Locations
The closures this period were not limited to small independent restaurants.
The Dunkin at 1329 E Oak St in Arcadia was emergency-closed October 5 for roach and fly activity, reopening at 9:25 a.m. It is one of only two national chain locations in the dataset.
Knife Steak House at 1455 NW 107 Ave in Doral, a full-service steakhouse, was closed October 5 for roach activity and reopened just after noon. Sawa at 360 San Lorenzo Ave in Coral Gables, a restaurant in one of Miami-Dade's most affluent neighborhoods, was also closed October 5 for roaches, not reopening until 1:04 p.m.
Golf clubs and athletic facilities appeared twice. World Tennis Club at 4802 Airport Rd in Naples was closed October 7 for rodent activity, reopening at 10:16 a.m. Miami Shores Golf Club, closed the same week, is the second.
Metro Diner at 4726 Cortez Rd W in Bradenton, a national casual dining chain, was closed October 5 for rodent activity. It reopened at 8:09 a.m., the earliest reopening time in the entire dataset.
October 7: Ten Closures in One Day
No single day in this two-week period produced more emergency closures than October 7, when inspectors ordered ten separate establishments shut across Florida.
Winghouse Bar and Grill at 250 N Atlantic Ave in Daytona Beach was closed for roach activity, not reopening until 3:41 p.m. Buccaneer Restaurant at 142 Lake Dr in Palm Beach Shores was closed for fly activity, reopening just before 10 a.m.
Nawabi Hyderabad House Biryani Place at 4225 W Lake Mary Blvd was closed for both rodent and fly activity, reopening at 9:15 a.m. Asian Fusion Buffet at 117 Harbor Village Ln in Apollo Beach was closed for roach and fly activity, reopening just before 10 a.m.
Amar Orlando at 8001 S Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando was closed for roach activity, reopening at 12:47 p.m. Gaspar Patio Bar and Grille at 8448 N 56 St in Temple Terrace was closed for rodent activity, not reopening until 2:47 p.m.
Copp Winery and Brewery at 7855 W Gulf to Lake Hwy in Crystal River was closed for rodent activity and did not reopen until 3:25 p.m., one of the longest closure durations recorded that week. The Grill at Stonegate Golf Club in Poinciana was closed for fly activity, reopening at 9:42 a.m.
Northside Asian Kitchen at 6737 US Hwy 98 N in Lakeland was also closed October 7 for roach activity, not reopening until 2:39 p.m. China One at 15711 Sheridan St in Davie was closed for roaches the same day; no URL is on record for either facility.
What These Violations Mean
Live pest activity is an emergency closure trigger precisely because it is not a paperwork violation. Roaches travel between drains, garbage, and food prep surfaces within a single kitchen. Every surface a roach crosses after contacting a drain or waste area becomes a potential contamination point for Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens. When inspectors document live roaches, they are documenting active contamination risk, not the potential for it.
Rodent activity carries a separate and in some ways more severe risk. Rodent droppings contain concentrated pathogen loads. A facility like Call Street Café in Starke, closed for all three pest types at once, represents a kitchen where multiple contamination routes are open simultaneously. The presence of rodents also frequently indicates structural breaches, gaps in walls or floors that no amount of cleaning addresses without physical repair.
Fly activity, which drove closures at Buccaneer Restaurant, Stonegate Golf Club, and Sushi Sake at 9565 SW 72 St in Miami, is often treated as less severe than roaches or rodents, but it is a direct food-contact contamination route. Flies move between waste and exposed food within seconds. An emergency closure for fly activity means inspectors observed enough fly presence to judge that food safety could not be maintained during service.
The speed of reopening matters here. Several of these facilities reopened within hours, some before noon on the same day. That turnaround is only possible when the underlying infestation is addressed quickly, usually through emergency pest control. It does not mean the conditions that allowed the infestation to develop have been corrected.
The Longer Record
Several facilities in this dataset carry substantial inspection histories that place this week's closures in a longer context.
La Carreta Mia at Miami International Airport, closed October 6 for rodent and fly activity, operates inside one of the country's busiest travel hubs, a location where inspection frequency tends to be higher than average. Harpoon Harry's Crab House at 225 S Franklin St in Tampa, closed October 6 for roaches, sits in downtown Tampa's business district, an area with consistent inspection traffic.
U Restaurant and Cool Beans Café at 3505 S Northlake Blvd in Altamonte Springs was closed October 5 for roach activity and did not reopen until 3:31 p.m., a closure duration of roughly seven hours. La Union Restaurant at 998 S State Rd 7 in Margate was closed the same day for roach and fly activity, reopening at 8:34 a.m.
Panhandlers at 3008 Hwy 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, on the Emerald Coast, was closed October 6 for rodent activity. The Panhandle corridor sees significant seasonal inspection activity as tourist-season closures wind down in October, making a rodent closure at that address notable for its timing.
Loading Zone at 24 E Washington St in Orlando was closed October 6 for rodent activity and did not reopen until 12:40 p.m. Bamboo Creek China Bistro at 800 Belle Terre Pkwy in Palm Coast was closed the same day for roach activity, reopening just before 11 a.m.
Baci Beachside at 218A Hwy A1A in Satellite Beach was closed October 8 for rodent and fly activity, reopening at 10:19 a.m. Tribute to Tobacco Road by Kush at 650 S Miami Ave, closed the same day for roach and fly activity, reopened at 8:53 a.m.
Copp Winery and Brewery in Crystal River had one of the longer closure durations in the dataset, not reopening until 3:25 p.m. on October 7. A winery and brewery operates with fermentation equipment, grain storage, and moisture conditions that are particularly attractive to rodents. Whether the facility's record shows prior rodent citations is not reflected in the data available, but a late-afternoon reopening on a rodent closure at a production facility suggests the remediation required more than a surface cleaning.
