TAMPA, FL. Three Tampa restaurants were emergency-closed in a single week, two of them on the same day, while a Chinese restaurant on North Himes Avenue racked up 11 high-severity violations including food from unapproved sources and contaminated food contact surfaces, the most of any facility inspected between August 12 and August 18, 2026.
The Closures
Emergency Closures: Tampa, Aug. 12–13, 2026
Molly Malone's Irish Pub on East Davis Boulevard and Abuabed LLC on East Fletcher Avenue were both ordered shut on August 12. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation cited roach activity at Molly Malone's and active sewage leaks at Abuabed.
The Grill at Morris Bridge on Cross Creek Boulevard followed the next day, also for roach activity. Two roach-related closures in 24 hours, at restaurants on opposite sides of the city, set the tone for the week.
The Violations
New China on North Himes Avenue led all inspected facilities with 11 high-severity violations and 5 intermediate citations. Inspectors found food contaminated by chemical, physical, or biological hazards, food sourced from unapproved or unknown suppliers, inadequate shell stock identification records, and food contact surfaces that were not properly cleaned or sanitized. Employees were observed using improper handwashing technique, and no person in charge was present or performing supervisory duties.
The unapproved food sourcing citation is particularly significant at a restaurant serving shellfish. New China was also cited separately for inadequate shell stock identification records, meaning inspectors could not trace where the shellfish came from or verify when it was harvested.
Luis's Garden Grille on West Hillsborough Avenue drew 10 high-severity violations and 4 intermediate citations, second-highest of the week. Inspectors cited food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, no employee health policy, and employees not reporting symptoms of illness. The absence of a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods was also documented.
Brunchies on North Dale Mabry Highway recorded 7 high-severity violations including inadequate handwashing facilities, improper sewage or wastewater disposal, and missing shell stock identification records. Inspectors also found no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items and toxic chemicals improperly stored. The sewage citation, an intermediate violation, placed it in the same category as the Abuabed closure that happened the same week.
Noble Crust on North Dale Mabry Highway was cited for 6 high-severity violations. Among them: food from an unapproved or unknown source, inadequate shell stock records, and time as a public health control not properly used. Inspectors also found that single-use items were being reused and that multi-use utensils had not been properly cleaned.
Salem's Fresh Eats on North 50th Street drew 6 high-severity violations, including no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, and toxic chemicals improperly stored. Time as a public health control was also cited as improperly used.
El Divino Jon 2 on West Waters Avenue had 5 high-severity violations including food in poor condition or adulterated, inadequate shell stock identification, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned. Inspectors also noted inadequate cooling and cold-holding equipment, an intermediate violation that compounds the food quality concerns.
Plum Tree on East Davis Boulevard was cited for 5 high-severity violations: no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, unsanitized food contact surfaces, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and toxic chemicals improperly stored. Toilet facilities were found inadequate or improperly maintained.
Talkin' Tacos on West Linebaugh Avenue recorded 4 high-severity violations alongside 4 intermediate citations, the highest intermediate count of the week. Inspectors found improper sewage or wastewater disposal, multi-use utensils not properly cleaned, single-use items being reused, and inadequate toilet facilities, all intermediate violations stacked on top of high-severity findings including no person in charge and improper handwashing technique.
Doodle Noodle Bar on West Linebaugh Avenue, located less than two blocks from Talkin' Tacos, drew 3 high-severity violations including food not cooked to the required minimum temperature and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned.
Checker's at 107 West Waters was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source alongside improper handwashing technique and employees not reporting illness symptoms. Inspectors also found inadequate cooling equipment and single-use items being reused.
Miguel's on West Kennedy Boulevard drew 4 high-severity violations including food from an unapproved source, inadequate shell stock records, no consumer advisory, and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.
McDonald's on East Busch Boulevard was cited for food from an unapproved source, unsanitized food contact surfaces, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items.
Poke Poke on South Falkenburg Road, a raw fish concept where consumer advisories are especially critical, was cited for no consumer advisory, inadequate shell stock records, improper handwashing technique, and employees not reporting illness symptoms.
Mayday Ice Cream on East 8th Avenue drew 4 high-severity violations including no person in charge, employees not reporting illness symptoms, inadequate handwashing by food employees, and no allergen awareness demonstrated. At an ice cream shop where cross-contact with allergens like dairy, nuts, and eggs is a constant operational risk, the allergen citation stands out.
Wingstop on Palm River Road recorded a single high-severity violation: toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.
What These Violations Mean
The most common high-severity violation this week, appearing at New China, Noble Crust, Checker's, Miguel's, and McDonald's, was food from an unapproved or unknown source. When a restaurant cannot document where its food came from, there is no traceability if customers get sick. USDA and FDA inspections exist specifically to screen for Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli at the supplier level. Food that bypasses that system carries no such verification.
Shellfish traceability failures, cited at New China, Brunchies, Noble Crust, El Divino Jon 2, Talkin' Tacos, Miguel's, and Poke Poke, carry a distinct risk. Oysters, clams, and mussels are often eaten raw or lightly cooked, and without harvest tags and dealer records, there is no way to link a sick customer back to the source bed if an outbreak occurs. Seven facilities in a single week without those records is not a paperwork problem.
No employee health policy or employees not reporting illness symptoms was documented at New China, Luis's Garden Grille, Brunchies, Salem's Fresh Eats, Checker's, Poke Poke, and Mayday Ice Cream. Norovirus, the leading cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in restaurants, spreads directly from an infected food worker to a customer through contaminated food. A written health policy that requires sick employees to stay home is the primary barrier. Without it, the barrier is gone.
Mayday Ice Cream's allergen awareness citation deserves particular attention. Food allergies send 30,000 Americans to emergency rooms each year and cause deaths. At a dessert shop where customers with dairy, nut, or egg allergies may believe they can safely order certain items, a staff with no demonstrated allergen awareness is a specific and identifiable hazard.
The Longer Record
Miguel's on West Kennedy has 36 prior inspections on record, the most of any facility cited this week, and still drew 4 high-severity violations including a toxic substances citation. Talkin' Tacos follows with 35 prior inspections and produced the week's highest intermediate violation count alongside 4 high-severity findings.
Brunchies and Doodle Noodle Bar each have 31 prior inspections on record. Brunchies drew 7 high-severity violations this week including a sewage citation. Doodle Noodle Bar was cited for food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, a finding that does not improve on its own between inspections.
Wingstop on Palm River Road has 30 prior inspections on record and produced only one high-severity violation this week. Salem's Fresh Eats has 29 prior inspections and still lacks a written employee health policy.
At the other end of the record, Mayday Ice Cream has only 8 prior inspections on record, making it one of the newest facilities in this week's data. It drew 4 high-severity violations, including the week's only allergen awareness citation.
Poke Poke has 16 prior inspections and serves raw fish as its core product. It was cited this week for no consumer advisory, no shell stock traceability records, and employees not reporting illness symptoms. Those three violations, at a raw-fish concept, remain unresolved in the inspection record.
