MONROE COUNTY, FL. A single Key West restaurant racked up eight high-severity violations in one inspection this week, including food contaminated by chemical or biological hazards, improperly stored toxic chemicals, and a failure to follow parasite destruction procedures for fish, according to state records for the week of August 5 through August 11, 2026.
Inspectors visited 15 times across 14 facilities in Monroe County. Twelve of those 14 facilities drew two or more high-severity violations. That is not a bad stretch for one neighborhood or one type of restaurant. That is the county.
The Worst of the Week
Jimmy's Ocean Blue Abbey Road at 3675 S Roosevelt Blvd drew the week's highest violation count by a wide margin. Eight high-severity citations came out of a single visit, including food found in poor condition or mislabeled, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked items, and no person in charge present or performing duties.
That last finding matters more than it might appear. When there is no one in charge, the rest of the list tends to follow.
The inspector also cited Jimmy's for improper hand and arm washing technique, parasite destruction procedures not being followed for fish, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled near food. Eight high-severity violations from one inspection at one address.
Sunset Pier / Hot Tin Roof at Zero Duval St drew six high-severity violations, including food sourced from an unapproved or unknown supplier, an employee not reporting symptoms of illness, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and time used as a public health control without being properly managed. The inspector also noted improper sewage or wastewater disposal as an intermediate violation.
No Name Pub at 30831 Watson Blvd in Big Pine Key matched Sunset Pier's count with six high-severity violations: no person in charge, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.
Pop's Smoke Shed at 31251 Ave A in Big Pine Key drew five high-severity violations, including food from an unapproved or unknown source, parasite destruction procedures not followed, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, improper handwashing technique, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. An intermediate citation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal accompanied the high-severity findings.
FL Key's Cafe at 30739 Overseas Hwy in Big Pine Key had four high-severity violations: an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items.
Hogfish Bar and Grill at 6810 Front St drew three high-severity violations: food not cooked to required minimum temperature, time used as a public health control without proper documentation or tracking, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Inspectors also cited improperly cleaned multi-use utensils and inadequate ventilation as intermediate violations.
Square Grouper in Islamorada at 80460 Overseas Highway had three high-severity violations: no written employee health policy, food from an unapproved or unknown source, and parasite destruction procedures not followed. An intermediate citation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal rounded out the report.
El Siboney Restaurant Stock Island at 5510 3 Ave drew three high-severity violations: food from an unapproved or unknown source, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.
Pizzaworks at 229 Key Deer Blvd in Big Pine Key was cited for food in poor condition or mislabeled, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. An intermediate citation for improper sewage disposal was also noted.
Banquet Prep Kitchen at Zero Duval St drew two high-severity violations: no written employee health policy and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. An intermediate sewage citation accompanied the report.
Twisted Shrimp at 87745 Overseas Hwy in Islamorada was cited for food contaminated by chemical, physical, or biological hazards and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used, along with an intermediate sewage violation.
Sunset Lounge at 80460 Overseas Hwy in Islamorada drew two high-severity violations: no written employee health policy and food not cooked to required minimum temperature.
What These Violations Mean
The most common single violation this week was the absence of a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. That citation appeared at Jimmy's Ocean Blue, Hogfish Bar and Grill, FL Key's Cafe, El Siboney, and Pop's Smoke Shed. Without that posted notice, diners with weakened immune systems, including elderly customers, pregnant women, and anyone on immunosuppressant medication, have no way of knowing which items on the menu carry elevated risk. In a county built on fresh seafood, the omission is not minor.
Food from unapproved or unknown sources, cited at Sunset Pier, Pop's Smoke Shed, Square Grouper, and El Siboney, removes the traceability that makes outbreak investigations possible. When a supplier is not licensed or documented, there is no chain of records to follow if a customer becomes ill. USDA and FDA inspections exist precisely to screen for Listeria, Salmonella, and other pathogens before food reaches a kitchen.
Parasite destruction failures at Jimmy's Ocean Blue, Pop's Smoke Shed, and Square Grouper are specific to raw or undercooked fish service. Parasites including Anisakis survive in raw fish that has not been frozen to the required temperature and duration. Sushi, ceviche, and lightly cooked seafood are the most common vehicles. The violation does not mean parasites were present. It means the protocol that would kill them was not being followed.
The management failure citation at both Jimmy's Ocean Blue and No Name Pub deserves particular attention. CDC data links the absence of active managerial control to three times the rate of critical violations in a facility. When no one in charge is present or performing oversight duties, the other violations on this week's list become predictable, not coincidental.
The Longer Record
No Name Pub is one of the Florida Keys' most recognizable landmarks, and its inspection record reflects a facility with significant history under state review. Six high-severity violations in a single week, including the absence of a person in charge, inadequate handwashing infrastructure, and toxic chemicals stored improperly, represent a serious accumulation for any establishment, regardless of its reputation.
Hogfish Bar and Grill at Front Street has similarly been on inspectors' radar for years. Three high-severity violations this week, including the failure to use time as a public health control properly, add to a documented pattern of food safety concerns at that address.
Square Grouper in Islamorada and Sunset Lounge, which share the 80460 Overseas Highway address, both drew high-severity violations this week. The co-location of two facilities at the same address, both with documented violations including food sourcing and employee health policy failures, raises questions about shared oversight and management practices at that site.
Pop's Smoke Shed and FL Key's Cafe are among a cluster of Big Pine Key facilities that together accounted for nine high-severity violations this week. Three of the county's five worst-performing facilities this week were located in Big Pine Key, not Key West, which typically draws the most inspection attention given its restaurant density.
Jimmy's Ocean Blue Abbey Road, the week's worst performer with eight high-severity violations, operates at 3675 S Roosevelt Blvd, a corridor with heavy tourist traffic. The facility's inspection this week documented food contact with chemical hazards, improperly stored toxic substances, and undercooking alongside the management failure. Whether any of those conditions existed in prior inspections is not reflected in this week's data, but eight citations in a single visit is not a baseline finding.
