FORT MYERS, FL. Speckled Egg on McGregor Boulevard accumulated eight high-severity violations during the week of July 13, including a finding that employees were not required to report illness symptoms and that staff demonstrated no allergen awareness, a combination inspectors flag as among the most dangerous in a food service setting.
The McGregor Boulevard breakfast spot was not alone. Fifteen Fort Myers restaurants drew high-severity citations during the seven-day stretch, and three were emergency-closed entirely, two of them on the same day.
The Closures
State inspectors ordered El Estadio Latin Sports Bar on South Cleveland Avenue and Outback Steakhouse on Gulf Coast Drive both shuttered on consecutive days for fly activity. Cactus Truck #2, also on South Cleveland Avenue, was closed July 16 after inspectors found no potable water on the premises.
The Violations
McGregor Pizza Company on South Tamiami Trail matched Speckled Egg's eight high-severity citations. Inspectors documented food from an unapproved or unknown source, inadequate shell stock identification records, parasite destruction procedures not followed, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, time as a public health control not properly used, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and no allergen awareness. That is the full spectrum of sourcing, preparation, and service failures in a single inspection.
Three Chinese restaurants on the southwest Fort Myers corridor each drew seven high-severity violations. No 1 Wok on Summerlin Road had no employee health policy, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, parasite destruction failures, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, time-as-public-health-control misuse, and no allergen awareness, plus an intermediate citation for multi-use utensils not properly cleaned.
China House on Alico Mission Way drew an almost identical list, substituting inadequate handwashing by food employees for the infrastructure citation and adding improperly stored or labeled toxic chemicals. Inspectors also cited multi-use utensils not properly cleaned.
New Tasty Wok on South Pointe Boulevard rounded out the cluster with seven high-severity findings of its own: no employee health policy, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper technique, time control misuse, no consumer advisory, improperly stored toxic chemicals, and no allergen awareness.
Nauti Parrot Oasis on South Tamiami Trail drew six high-severity citations. The person in charge was not present or not performing duties, no employee health policy was in place, employees were not reporting illness symptoms, handwashing technique was improper, time as a public health control was misused, and no consumer advisory was posted for raw or undercooked foods. Inspectors also cited improper sewage or wastewater disposal as an intermediate violation.
Pei Wei Fresh Kitchen on Corporate Commerce Way drew four high-severity violations, including food not cooked to required minimum temperature, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and two separate chemical storage failures: toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.
Lazy Flamingo 4 on McGregor Boulevard was cited for four high-severity violations, among them inadequate shell stock identification records and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. The inspection also found improper sewage or wastewater disposal, multi-use utensils not properly cleaned, improper sanitizing solution or procedures, and inadequate or improperly maintained toilet facilities.
Skillets on South Cleveland Avenue drew a finding that food came from an unapproved or unknown source, alongside an employee not reporting symptoms of illness and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.
Blue Pointe Oyster Bar on US Highway 41 was cited for an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food from an unapproved or unknown source, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. Inspectors also found improper sewage or wastewater disposal.
Savour Coffee on South Tamiami Trail drew three high-severity violations: time as a public health control not properly used, no allergen awareness, and required procedures for specialized processes not followed.
Krab Hut House on South Cleveland Avenue was cited for an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, along with four intermediate violations including improper sewage disposal and inadequate toilet facilities.
Koko Chicken on South Tamiami Trail drew a high-severity finding that food was not cooked to required minimum temperature, alongside no allergen awareness and four intermediate violations.
Buffet City on South Cleveland Avenue was cited for improper handwashing technique and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. Spice Club India's Grill on South Tamiami Trail drew three high-severity violations: no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, and no allergen awareness.
What These Violations Mean
The illness-reporting failures at Speckled Egg, Nauti Parrot Oasis, Krab Hut House, and Skillets represent the most direct pathway from a sick employee to a sick customer. Norovirus, which causes roughly 20 million illnesses in the United States each year, spreads person-to-person through food handling. When no policy exists requiring workers to report symptoms, there is no mechanism to remove an infected employee from food preparation before transmission occurs.
The unapproved food source citations at McGregor Pizza Company, Skillets, and Blue Pointe Oyster Bar carry a different but equally serious risk. Food that bypasses USDA and FDA inspection has no traceability chain. If a customer becomes ill, investigators cannot trace the product back to its origin, which means a contaminated lot may remain in distribution. At Blue Pointe Oyster Bar, that violation appeared alongside inadequate shell stock records, which is a separate traceability failure specific to shellfish consumed raw.
The allergen awareness failures documented at eight facilities this week, including Speckled Egg, McGregor Pizza Company, No 1 Wok, New Tasty Wok, Lazy Flamingo 4, Savour Coffee, Spice Club India's Grill, and Koko Chicken, are not a paperwork issue. Food allergies send 30,000 people to emergency rooms annually in the United States. When staff cannot identify allergens in dishes or communicate them to customers, a person with a tree nut or shellfish allergy has no reliable way to make a safe choice.
The chemical storage violations at China House, New Tasty Wok, and Pei Wei Fresh Kitchen are acute hazards. Cleaning chemicals stored near or above food preparation surfaces can contaminate food directly. At Pei Wei, inspectors cited two separate chemical handling failures in the same visit, suggesting the problem was not isolated to a single storage decision.
The Longer Record
Pei Wei Fresh Kitchen has 39 prior inspections on record, the most of any facility cited this week, and still drew four high-severity violations including dual chemical storage failures. New Tasty Wok has 35 prior inspections behind it, yet this week's visit found no employee health policy, inadequate handwashing infrastructure, and no consumer advisory for undercooked foods.
Lazy Flamingo 4 has 36 prior inspections and drew eight violations total this week, four of them high-severity, including shell stock traceability and sewage disposal failures. Buffet City carries 32 prior inspections and still had handwashing technique and surface sanitation failures on the books this week.
Speckled Egg's 31 prior inspections and this week's eight high-severity citations tell a long story. An employee illness reporting failure at a restaurant with three decades of inspection history is not a new operation finding its footing.
Savour Coffee has only three prior inspections on record, making it one of the newest facilities in this week's data. It already carries three high-severity violations, including a failure to follow required procedures for specialized processes, a citation that applies to operations like reduced-oxygen packaging or fermenting that require precise controls to prevent pathogen growth.
Koko Chicken has seven prior inspections and drew a high-severity finding that food was not cooked to required minimum temperature. For a restaurant whose name describes its core product, that citation remains unresolved in this week's record.
