FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. Lucky Cat Street Eatery at 6322 N Andrews Ave was emergency-closed on July 28 after inspectors documented roach activity at the restaurant, one of 15 Fort Lauderdale establishments cited for high-severity violations during the week of July 28 through August 3, 2026.
The closure came alongside five high-severity violations at Lucky Cat, including no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, and inadequate shell stock identification. The restaurant had accumulated 27 prior inspections before this week's visit.
The Violations
Big Louies Pizzeria at 3095 W Cypress Creek Rd led the week with seven high-severity violations, the most of any facility inspected. Among them: food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and an employee not reporting illness symptoms.
Inspectors also cited Big Louies for inadequate shell stock identification, improper use of time as a public health control, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and improper handwashing technique. That is a full sweep of the most consequential food-handling failures a kitchen can accumulate in a single visit.
Jet Runway Cafe at 5540 NW 21 Ter matched that count with seven high-severity violations of its own. Inspectors found no person in charge present or performing duties, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, no employee illness reporting, inadequate shell stock records, parasite destruction procedures not followed, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned.
The parasite destruction citation is notable. It means fish served at the cafe was not frozen or cooked according to the procedures required to kill parasites including Anisakis and tapeworm.
Ceviche Barrio by Antojitos To Go at 6303 Powerline Rd drew six high-severity violations and four intermediate ones. Inspectors cited inadequate handwashing facilities, improper technique, food not cooked to minimum temperature, food contact surfaces not sanitized, no consumer advisory, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. An intermediate violation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal rounded out the report.
Xtreme Action Park at 5300 N Powerline Rd received six high-severity citations, including no person in charge, no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, inadequate handwashing facilities, no shell stock identification, and food not cooked to required temperature. The facility is an entertainment venue, not a standalone restaurant, which makes the absence of any employee health infrastructure more striking.
Adam and Joe Know Lunch at 6355 N Andrews Ave also collected six high-severity violations: no person in charge, no employee health policy, employees not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, improper use of time as a public health control, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.
A Cluster on Powerline, and a Chain That Struggled
Three of the week's most-cited restaurants sit within blocks of each other along N Powerline Rd. Cha-Baa Thai and Japanese Restaurant at 6316 N Powerline Rd drew five high-severity violations including inadequate handwashing facilities, improper technique, no shell stock records, unsanitized food contact surfaces, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors added three intermediate violations for improperly cleaned utensils, inadequate sanitizing solution, and poor ventilation.
La Mia Focaccia at 6330 N Powerline Rd was cited for four high-severity violations: improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not sanitized, no consumer advisory, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.
Chick-fil-A at 2650 N Federal Hwy drew four high-severity violations, including no person in charge, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food contact surfaces not properly sanitized, and no consumer advisory. An intermediate violation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal was also on the report.
Gilbert's 17th Street Grill at 1821 Cordova Rd was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source, a violation that inspectors also documented this week at Bangkok Bistro at 1527 N Federal Hwy and at Tamarindo Harbor Seafood Bar and Grill at 1025 N Federal Hwy. Gilbert's also drew citations for toxic substances improperly stored, improper handwashing technique, and improper use of time as a public health control.
Bangkok Bistro's four high-severity violations included food from an unapproved source, food contact surfaces not sanitized, improper handwashing technique, and improper use of time as a public health control.
Tamarindo Harbor's three high-severity citations included no person in charge, food from an unapproved source, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items.
Treasure's Restaurant and Bar at 81 SW 31 Ave was cited for food in poor condition, mislabeled, or adulterated, alongside four intermediate violations including improper sewage disposal and equipment in poor repair. IHOP at 2630 W Broward Blvd drew two high-severity violations for improper handwashing and no consumer advisory. McHaig Inc at 2410 W Broward Blvd was cited for inadequate shell stock records and no consumer advisory, with an intermediate violation for inadequate cooling and cold-holding equipment.
What These Violations Mean
The single most dangerous pattern this week was the cluster of employee illness violations at Big Louies, Jet Runway Cafe, Xtreme Action Park, Lucky Cat, Adam and Joe Know Lunch, and Chick-fil-A. When employees do not report illness symptoms and no health policy exists to require them to do so, a sick worker can transmit Norovirus to dozens of customers in a single shift. Norovirus accounts for roughly 20 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States each year, and the primary transmission route is an infected food handler who keeps working.
The unapproved food source citations at Gilbert's 17th Street Grill, Bangkok Bistro, and Tamarindo Harbor carry a different kind of risk. Food from unapproved sources bypasses USDA and FDA inspection entirely. If a customer gets sick and the source of the food is unknown, investigators have no supply chain to trace. That traceability gap is what turns a single illness into an unsolvable outbreak.
Shell stock traceability violations appeared at Big Louies, Jet Runway Cafe, Xtreme Action Park, Cha-Baa Thai, Lucky Cat, and McHaig Inc. Oysters, clams, and mussels are filter feeders that concentrate pathogens from surrounding water. They are frequently consumed raw. Without shellstock identification tags, there is no way to link a Vibrio or hepatitis A case back to the harvest bed that produced the contaminated shellfish.
Toxic chemical storage violations at Ceviche Barrio and La Mia Focaccia are often dismissed as administrative. They are not. Chemicals stored near or above food preparation areas can contaminate food through spills or mislabeling. The risk is acute, not theoretical.
The Longer Record
Tamarindo Harbor Seafood Bar and Grill and Treasure's Restaurant and Bar each have 32 prior inspections on record, the highest counts among facilities cited this week. Tamarindo drew food-source and management violations despite that long history. Treasure's, with the same inspection depth, was still cited for food in poor condition and improper sewage disposal.
Big Louies Pizzeria has 30 prior inspections behind it and still accumulated seven high-severity violations in a single visit, including an undercooking citation and an employee illness reporting failure. That is not a facility encountering inspectors for the first time.
Lucky Cat Street Eatery had 27 prior inspections before it was emergency-closed on July 28. Bangkok Bistro also carries 27 prior inspections, as does Chick-fil-A on Federal Hwy. Cha-Baa Thai and Ceviche Barrio each have 26 prior inspections. All five drew multiple high-severity violations this week.
The newer entries tell a different story. Adam and Joe Know Lunch has just 14 prior inspections and already accumulated six high-severity violations, including no person in charge and no employee health policy. IHOP on Broward Blvd has 10 inspections on record. McHaig Inc has 13. All three drew high-severity citations in their relatively short inspection histories.
Lucky Cat Street Eatery remained closed as of the inspection record date, with roach activity documented and five high-severity violations unresolved at the time of closure.
