TAMPA, FL. Inspectors visiting New China on North Himes Avenue this week documented 11 high-severity violations in a single visit, including food from unapproved or unknown sources, contaminated food contact surfaces, inadequate shell stock records, and an employee observed failing to report symptoms of illness. It was the highest single-facility violation count among 15 Tampa restaurants that drew high-severity citations between August 13 and August 19.

The same week, the Grill at Morris Bridge on Cross Creek Boulevard was emergency-closed after inspectors found roach activity on August 13.

At New China, the person in charge was documented as absent or not performing duties, and no employee health policy was on file. Inspectors also cited an employee for not reporting illness symptoms, and noted improper hand and arm washing technique. The food from unapproved sources citation is among the most serious a restaurant can receive.

Luis's Garden Grille on West Hillsborough Avenue drew eight high-severity violations. Inspectors found food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, and no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. The facility also lacked an employee health policy and had no person in charge present.

Brunchies on North Dale Mabry Highway collected seven high-severity violations including inadequate handwashing facilities, improper sewage or waste water disposal, and no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked foods. Inspectors also flagged inadequate shell stock identification records and improperly stored toxic chemicals.

Baan Tawan Sushi on South Dale Mabry Highway was cited for food from unapproved or unknown sources, food in poor condition or adulterated, and inadequate shell stock records. A sushi restaurant receiving food from sources that bypass federal inspection is a particular concern given the volume of raw fish served.

Baygulls and Bakery on West Hillsborough Avenue drew five high-severity violations including a citation for failing to follow parasite destruction procedures. That violation, which applies to fish served raw or undercooked, means the facility could not demonstrate it had properly frozen fish to kill parasites such as Anisakis before serving.

Mayday Ice Cream on East 8th Avenue was cited for four high-severity violations: no person in charge present, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, inadequate handwashing by food employees, and no allergen awareness demonstrated. At a shop where dairy and nut-based products are common, the allergen citation carries direct risk.

Checker's #474-7060 on West Waters drew four high-severity violations including food from an unapproved or unknown source, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, and improper handwashing technique. Inspectors also noted single-use items being improperly reused and inadequate cooling or cold-holding equipment.

Plum Tree on East Davis Boulevard received five high-severity citations including improperly stored toxic chemicals, improper handwashing technique, no employee health policy, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. An intermediate violation for inadequate or improperly maintained toilet facilities was also recorded.

Anchor Bar Inc on East Davis Boulevard was cited for four high-severity violations including inadequate shell stock records, improper handwashing technique, and no consumer advisory. Improperly used wiping cloths and inadequate toilet facilities rounded out the inspection report.

Miguel's on West Kennedy Boulevard drew citations for food from unapproved sources, inadequate shell stock records, no consumer advisory, and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.

Sodexo on Air Cargo Road, a food service operation at Tampa International Airport, was cited for an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improperly stored toxic chemicals, contaminated food contact surfaces, no consumer advisory, and improper sewage disposal.

Salem's Fresh Eats on North 50th Street and Doodle Noodle Bar on West Linebaugh Avenue each drew two high-severity violations, both including food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods.

Talkin' Tacos on West Linebaugh Avenue received one high-severity violation for no consumer advisory and an intermediate citation for improper sewage or waste water disposal.

Wingstop on Palm River Road drew a single high-severity citation for toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled.

What These Violations Mean

The food from unapproved sources citation, recorded this week at New China, Baan Tawan Sushi, Checker's, and Miguel's, is one of the hardest violations to dismiss as paperwork. Food that enters a restaurant through unapproved channels has bypassed USDA and FDA inspections, meaning there is no verified chain of custody if a customer becomes sick. Investigators tracing a Salmonella or Listeria outbreak need to know exactly where food came from. Without that documentation, the trail goes cold.

The cluster of employee illness reporting failures at New China, Brunchies, Mayday Ice Cream, Checker's, and Sodexo points to a systemic gap in training. Norovirus is the most common cause of foodborne illness in the United States, and a single infected food worker can expose dozens of customers in a single shift. A written health policy, which New China and Luis's Garden Grille both lacked, is the basic mechanism that tells employees they are not supposed to come to work while vomiting or experiencing diarrhea.

The consumer advisory violation, cited at seven facilities this week, is sometimes treated as a minor paperwork issue. It is not. Customers with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, the elderly, and young children face measurably higher risk from raw or undercooked proteins. A menu that does not disclose that risk removes the customer's ability to make an informed choice.

At Baygulls and Bakery, the parasite destruction failure is specific. Fish served raw or undercooked must be frozen to defined temperatures for defined periods to kill parasites such as Anisakis, which can cause severe abdominal pain and, in rare cases, require surgical removal. The citation means inspectors found no documentation that this step had been taken.

The Longer Record

Talkin' Tacos and Miguel's each have 36 prior inspections on record, the longest histories of any facility in this week's roundup. Doodle Noodle Bar follows with 32 and Brunchies with 31. Salem's Fresh Eats and Wingstop each have 30. These are not new restaurants encountering their first inspector. Facilities with that many inspections have had repeated opportunities to correct systemic problems, and the presence of high-severity violations in their current records suggests those corrections have not fully held.

New China, with 27 prior inspections and 11 high-severity violations in a single visit this week, presents a particularly concentrated record. The violations documented this week, including food sourcing, illness reporting, handwashing technique, and food contact surface sanitation, span multiple categories. That breadth across 27 inspections suggests the issues are not isolated to one area of the kitchen.

Baan Tawan Sushi has only two prior inspections on record, making this week's five high-severity citations, including food from unapproved sources and food in poor condition, notable for a facility that has barely been in the inspection cycle. Mayday Ice Cream, with eight prior inspections, is also relatively new to the record and already carrying four high-severity violations including allergen awareness failures and inadequate handwashing.

Sodexo on Air Cargo Road has six prior inspections and serves a population that includes airport employees and travelers moving through Tampa International. The improper sewage disposal citation recorded this week had also appeared as an intermediate violation at Brunchies and Talkin' Tacos, making it one of the week's recurring intermediate findings across otherwise unconnected facilities.

The Longer Record

The Grill at Morris Bridge on Cross Creek Boulevard was emergency-closed on August 13 for roach activity. As of the close of the inspection week, no reopening record appears in the data reviewed for this report.
