TAMPA, FL. Coppertail Brewing Co. on East 2nd Avenue was emergency-closed for rodent activity on August 11, the same week state inspectors had already cited the brewery for a high-severity violation, making it both a closure and an inspection-week case study in how quickly a food safety situation can escalate.

Coppertail was one of four Tampa restaurants ordered shut between August 11 and August 13. Grill at Morris Bridge on Cross Creek Boulevard and Molly Malone's Irish Pub on East Davis Boulevard were both closed August 12 for roach activity. Abuabed LLC on East Fletcher Avenue was also closed August 12, for sewage leaks.

Fifteen Tampa facilities drew high-severity violations during the same seven-day stretch.

Molly Malone's Irish Pub sits on East Davis Boulevard in the same neighborhood as Plum Tree, which drew five high-severity violations this week including improperly stored toxic chemicals and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. The two Davis Boulevard locations were cited in the same inspection cycle.

Abuabed LLC's sewage closure is among the most serious on record this week. Sewage leaks introduce fecal contamination that can spread across a kitchen floor, onto equipment, and into food prep areas within hours.

The Violations

New China on North Himes Avenue led all facilities this week with 11 high-severity violations and 5 intermediate ones. Inspectors cited the restaurant for food from an unapproved or unknown source, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, inadequate shellfish identification records, and food contaminated by chemical, physical, or biological hazards. No person in charge was present or performing duties, and no employee health policy was in place.

The combination at New China is particularly dense. An absent manager, no health policy, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, and improper handwashing technique cited in the same visit means the facility's entire front line of disease prevention was absent simultaneously.

Klas La on North 30th Street drew 8 high-severity violations. Inspectors found food not cooked to required minimum temperature, toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, food in poor condition or adulterated, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Like New China, Klas La had no person in charge present and no employee health policy.

Brunchies on North Dale Mabry Highway was cited for 7 high-severity violations, including inadequate handwashing facilities, improper sewage or wastewater disposal, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and missing shellfish identification records. An employee was documented as not reporting symptoms of illness.

Noble Crust on North Dale Mabry Highway drew 6 high-severity violations. Inspectors found food from an unapproved source, inadequate shellfish records, time not properly used as a public health control, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Multi-use utensils were not properly cleaned and single-use items were being reused.

Palau's Cafe on North Armenia Avenue was cited for parasite destruction procedures not followed, toxic chemicals improperly stored, improper handwashing technique, no employee health policy, and an employee not reporting illness symptoms. Improper sewage disposal was also documented as an intermediate violation.

Pinto Thai on South MacDill Avenue drew five high-severity violations, including food not cooked to required minimum temperature, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no consumer advisory. No employee health policy was in place.

El Divino Jon 2 on West Waters Avenue was cited for food in poor condition or adulterated, inadequate shellfish records, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also noted inadequate cooling and cold holding equipment as an intermediate violation.

Sarione Restaurant on West Cypress Street drew five high-severity violations including parasite destruction procedures not followed, toxic chemicals improperly stored, inadequate shellfish records, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized.

Talkin' Tacos on West Linebaugh Avenue was cited for four high-severity violations including no person in charge, improper handwashing technique, inadequate shellfish records, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also found improper sewage disposal, single-use items being reused, and inadequate toilet facilities.

Doodle Noodle Bar, also on West Linebaugh Avenue just blocks from Talkin' Tacos, drew four high-severity violations: improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, and no consumer advisory. Improper sewage disposal was documented as well.

Checker's at 107 West Waters was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, and no consumer advisory. Inadequate cooling equipment was noted as an intermediate violation.

Riveters on North Dale Mabry Highway drew four high-severity violations, including no person in charge, inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, and no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. Allergen failures are among the least visible risks in a kitchen and among the most acutely dangerous for individual customers.

McDonald's on East Busch Boulevard was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, toxic chemicals improperly stored, and no consumer advisory. Single-use items were documented as being reused.

What These Violations Mean

The most frequently cited high-severity violation this week was the absence of a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, appearing at nine of the fifteen facilities. That citation matters most for customers who are elderly, pregnant, or immunocompromised. When a menu item is served raw or undercooked and no advisory is posted, those customers have no way to make an informed choice. Noble Crust, Pinto Thai, El Divino Jon 2, Plum Tree, Doodle Noodle Bar, Talkin' Tacos, Checker's, and McDonald's on Busch Boulevard all drew this citation.

Food from an unapproved or unknown source, documented at New China, Noble Crust, Checker's, and McDonald's on Busch, carries a different kind of risk. When food enters a kitchen outside the licensed supply chain, there is no traceability. If a customer gets sick, investigators cannot identify the origin of the contaminated product or determine how many others were exposed.

Parasite destruction failures at Palau's Cafe and Sarione Restaurant represent a specific and underreported hazard. Fish served raw or undercooked, including sushi-grade preparations, must be frozen to specific temperatures for specific durations to kill parasites like Anisakis. When those procedures are skipped, the parasites survive to the plate.

The sewage violations at Brunchies, Talkin' Tacos, Doodle Noodle Bar, and Palau's Cafe, and the emergency sewage closure of Abuabed LLC, point to the same underlying risk. Raw sewage in a food service environment contains pathogens including E. coli, Hepatitis A, and Norovirus. Contamination can travel from a floor drain to a prep surface faster than a single shift.

The Longer Record

Talkin' Tacos has the longest inspection history of any facility cited this week, with 35 prior inspections on record. This week's citations include sewage, shellfish records, handwashing, and management failures. A facility that has been inspected 35 times and is still drawing violations in foundational categories like handwashing and managerial control is not a facility that corrected its problems and backslid. It is a facility with persistent gaps.

Brunchies carries 31 prior inspections. Coppertail Brewing, now closed for rodent activity, had 30 inspections on record before this week. Doodle Noodle Bar had 29. None of those histories prevented the violations documented during this inspection cycle.

Riveters is among the newest facilities in this week's data, with 16 prior inspections. It drew four high-severity violations including no allergen awareness demonstrated, a citation that requires specific staff training to correct. McDonald's on Busch Boulevard, with 17 prior inspections, was cited for food from an unapproved source, a violation that raises questions about the facility's supply chain documentation regardless of the national brand operating the location.

Klas La had 21 prior inspections before this week's 8 high-severity citations. Sarione Restaurant had 21 as well. Both drew violations in multiple foundational categories. Coppertail Brewing's rodent closure came on August 11, the first day of the inspection week, and the facility had 30 prior inspections on record at that point. Whether those prior inspections documented conditions that preceded the rodent activity is not reflected in the data released this week.
