ORLANDO, FL. Spicy Girl on International Drive drew 12 high-severity violations during the week of August 6, the highest single-facility count in Orange County that week, with inspectors citing food from unapproved sources, no employee illness policy, improper handwashing technique, and no documentation for shellfish traceability, all in a single visit.

That visit came during a week when 15 Orlando restaurants collectively accumulated high-severity violations, and two separate locations on opposite ends of the city were ordered shut on the same day.

On the same morning Spicy Girl was inspected, inspectors ordered Juicy Crab at 7308 International Drive shut down for roach and fly activity. TGI Friday's on Caravan Court was not closed, but its inspection that week turned up improper sewage disposal alongside seven high-severity violations including improperly stored chemicals and no shellfish traceability records.

A second emergency closure came the same day, August 7, at Jersey Mike's Subs on Conroy Road, also for roach activity. That location is not among the 15 facilities with detailed violation data this week, but its closure on the same calendar day as Juicy Crab marks a notable concentration.

Red Lobster at 5936 International Drive accumulated 10 high-severity violations, including a citation for failing to follow parasite destruction procedures for fish, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items. Inspectors also cited employees for not reporting illness symptoms and for improper handwashing technique.

Sickies Burgers and Brews at 11701 International Drive matched Red Lobster's count at 10 high-severity violations. The list included food from unapproved sources, parasite destruction failures, food not cooked to required temperature, and no consumer advisory, alongside no employee health policy and improper handwashing technique.

Rock and Brews on South Semoran Boulevard drew 9 high-severity violations, among them inadequate handwashing facilities, food from unapproved sources, and no consumer advisory for raw items. Inspectors also found no person in charge present or performing duties.

Pesaro's Pizza in Avalon Park also reached 9 high-severity violations, including food not cooked to required temperature, improper use of time as a public health control, and no consumer advisory. The person in charge was absent or not performing duties during the inspection.

Moa Kai Diner on East Colonial Drive collected 8 high-severity violations, including toxic chemicals improperly stored near food, inadequate shellfish records, parasite destruction failures, and no consumer advisory. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for food from unapproved sources.

Jack and Mary's Restaurant on South Goldenrod Road drew 8 high-severity violations including food from unapproved sources, improperly stored chemicals, inadequate shellfish records, and a citation for no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff.

Burntwood Tavern on Dr. Phillips Boulevard reached 7 high-severity violations, including inadequate handwashing facilities, food not cooked to required temperature, and improper sewage disposal noted as an intermediate violation. Inspectors also found toxic substances improperly identified or stored.

D Flats on Apopka Vineland Road drew 7 high-severity violations including no allergen awareness, improperly stored chemicals, and single-use items being reused, an intermediate violation that signals broader sanitation shortcuts.

Hop Bo Chinese Restaurant on Curry Ford Road was cited for 7 high-severity violations including food not cooked to required temperature, improperly stored chemicals, and improper use of time as a public health control.

Azteca D'Oro Lake Nona on Narcoossee Road accumulated 7 high-severity violations, including food from unapproved sources, improperly stored chemicals, and no person in charge present. Inspectors also noted multi-use utensils not properly cleaned as an intermediate violation.

Yummi on South Alafaya Trail drew 7 high-severity violations including improperly stored chemicals, no consumer advisory, and improper sewage disposal. The person in charge was absent or not performing duties.

One Stop Dumpling on West Colonial Drive was cited for 7 high-severity violations including inadequate handwashing facilities, no employee health policy, food from unapproved sources, and improper sewage disposal.

What These Violations Mean

The single most repeated high-severity violation across this week's inspections was employees not reporting illness symptoms, cited at Spicy Girl, Red Lobster, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Rock and Brews, Pesaro's Pizza, Jack and Mary's, Azteca D'Oro, Yummi, and Juicy Crab. This is not a paperwork problem. A food worker who is sick with Norovirus and continues handling ready-to-eat food can expose dozens of customers in a single shift. Norovirus causes roughly 20 million illnesses annually in the United States, and restaurant workers are among its most efficient transmission vectors.

Food from unapproved sources, cited at Spicy Girl, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Rock and Brews, Pesaro's Pizza, Moa Kai Diner, Jack and Mary's, Azteca D'Oro, and One Stop Dumpling, carries a different kind of risk. When food enters a kitchen without passing through licensed and inspected suppliers, there is no traceability chain. If a customer gets sick, investigators cannot trace the product back to a source, cannot issue a recall, and cannot determine how many other restaurants received the same contaminated batch.

Parasite destruction failures at Red Lobster, Sickies Burgers and Brews, Rock and Brews, and Moa Kai Diner mean that fish served at those locations during the inspection period had not been verified as frozen to the temperatures and durations required to kill Anisakis and other parasites. This matters most when fish is served raw or lightly cooked. Red Lobster and Moa Kai Diner also lacked adequate shellfish identification records, meaning oysters, clams, or mussels served there could not be traced to a harvest location if illness followed.

Improperly stored or labeled chemicals were cited at seven facilities this week, including Juicy Crab, Moa Kai Diner, Jack and Mary's, Burntwood Tavern, Hop Bo, Azteca D'Oro, TGI Friday's, Yummi, and D Flats. Cleaning chemicals stored near or above food preparation surfaces create a direct contamination pathway. Mislabeled containers create a second risk: a worker who cannot identify a container's contents cannot safely use it or respond appropriately if it spills.

The Longer Record

Rock and Brews on South Semoran Boulevard carries the longest inspection history of any facility in this week's data, with 38 prior inspections on record. Nine high-severity violations at a location that has been through 38 prior inspections is not a new operation still finding its footing. Pesaro's Pizza in Avalon Park has 33 prior inspections, Burntwood Tavern has 33, and TGI Friday's on Caravan Court also sits at 33. The pattern of high-severity violations at facilities with three dozen prior inspections on record suggests these are not first-time oversights.

Juicy Crab, which was emergency-closed for roach and fly activity on August 7, had 35 prior inspections on record before this week. Jack and Mary's, which drew 8 high-severity violations including food from unapproved sources and no allergen awareness, also had 35 prior inspections. Moa Kai Diner had 32 prior inspections before its 8-violation visit this week.

Red Lobster at 5936 International Drive had 31 prior inspections and Azteca D'Oro had 31, both drawing 10 and 7 high-severity violations respectively this week. These are not restaurants encountering inspectors for the first time.

At the other end of the spectrum, One Stop Dumpling on West Colonial Drive had only 11 prior inspections on record and Sickies Burgers and Brews had 13, making this week's double-digit and near-double-digit high-severity counts early accumulations for relatively newer locations. Spicy Girl, which led the week with 12 high-severity violations, had 22 prior inspections, placing it in a middle tier of inspection history but at the top of this week's violation count.

Juicy Crab's emergency closure for pest activity came despite 35 prior inspections on record. Whether those prior inspections documented pest-related warnings before this week's closure has not been released.
