FORT MYERS, FL. Eight Ball Lounge on South US 41 drew eight high-severity violations in a single inspection last week, including citations for food from unapproved sources, no approved potable water supply, and failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, the most alarming combination of findings in a week that saw 15 Fort Myers restaurants cited for serious health code violations.

The lounge at 14500 S US 41 also drew citations for inadequate handwashing, improper handwashing technique, food not cooked to required minimum temperature, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. That is eight high-severity violations in one visit, plus four intermediate citations. Eight Ball Lounge has 27 prior inspections on record.

China Xpress on Altamont Avenue was cited for an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. China Wok on Cleveland Avenue drew the same three core violations: employee not reporting illness, improper handwashing technique, and improperly cleaned food contact surfaces.

Hideaway Rest and Lounge on Trailwinds Drive was cited for no person in charge present, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used.

What These Violations Mean

The single most dangerous combination documented this week appeared at Eight Ball Lounge: no approved potable water supply paired with food from unapproved or unknown sources. Non-potable water can carry E. coli, Cryptosporidium, and Legionella. Food from unapproved sources bypasses USDA and FDA inspection entirely, which means if someone gets sick, investigators have no supply chain to trace.

Illness reporting failures showed up at seven facilities this week, including Labadie Bar Restaurant and Bakery, Cadeau Cafe, Rib City, Burntwood Tavern, Sweet Tomatoes, China Xpress, China Wok, and Hideaway Rest and Lounge. A food worker who comes in sick with Norovirus and handles ready-to-eat food can infect dozens of customers in a single shift. Norovirus is responsible for roughly 20 million illnesses in the United States each year, and food service workers are one of its primary transmission routes.

Improper handwashing technique, distinct from simply skipping handwashing, was cited at nine facilities this week, including Eight Ball Lounge, Labadie, Cadeau Cafe, FK Your Diet, Burntwood Tavern, Panda Express, Cantina Laredo, China Xpress, and China Wok. Studies show that even when workers wash their hands, incorrect technique leaves enough pathogens on skin to contaminate food. At facilities where that violation is paired with improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, as it was at Panda Express, Burntwood Tavern, and China Wok, the contamination pathway runs from worker hands to cutting surfaces to food without interruption.

Allergen awareness failures at Burntwood Tavern, FK Your Diet, Cantina Laredo, and Jason's Deli carry acute consequences. Food allergies send roughly 30,000 Americans to emergency rooms each year. A kitchen that cannot demonstrate awareness of the top allergens is a kitchen where a customer with a severe allergy has no reliable protection.

The Longer Record

Tropical Creole Restaurant on Fowler Street has 48 prior inspections on record, the most of any facility cited this week, and still drew a high-severity citation for improperly cleaned food contact surfaces. Forty-eight inspections represents years of regulatory contact. A single high-severity violation after that many visits may look like an improvement on paper, but it also means the facility has been under sustained scrutiny for a long time.

China Xpress on Altamont Avenue has 40 prior inspections on record and was still cited for three high-severity violations this week, including an employee not reporting illness symptoms and improperly cleaned food contact surfaces. Jalapeno's on Cleveland Avenue has 38 inspections on record and drew three high-severity citations of its own, including no employee health policy and toxic substances improperly stored.

FK Your Diet on South Tamiami Trail and Panda Express at Six Mile Cypress each have 30 prior inspections. Both drew multiple high-severity violations this week. Cantina Laredo has 31 inspections on record and was still cited for toxic chemicals improperly stored and no allergen awareness.

Sweet Tomatoes on South Tamiami Trail stands out in the opposite direction. With only three prior inspections on record, it is among the newest facilities to appear in this dataset, and it arrived with four high-severity violations including no employee health policy, no person in charge, and improper sewage disposal. Cadeau Cafe, with nine prior inspections, drew six high-severity violations including food from an unapproved source and parasite destruction procedures not followed. Both facilities are early in their inspection histories and already accumulating serious citations. Sweet Tomatoes' improper sewage disposal citation remained unresolved in the inspection record at the close of the reporting week.
