FLORIDA. Nine restaurants across Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys were cited this week for storing or labeling toxic chemicals improperly near food, while six others failed to cook food to the minimum temperatures required to kill pathogens like Salmonella, according to state inspection records for the week of September 16 through September 22, 2026.

The violations span fast food chains, a national sit-down chain, a Portuguese bistro, a sushi restaurant, and a roadside Keys eatery, with the heaviest concentration in Miami.

McDonald's of Doral West at 11390 NW 41 St was cited for toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, a high-priority violation that state inspectors flag when cleaning agents, sanitizers, or other hazardous compounds are found in proximity to food preparation areas or without proper identification.

Miller's Doral Ale House at 3271 NW 87 Ave received the same high-priority citation. The two Doral-area locations sit roughly four miles apart and were both flagged during the same inspection week.

El Mayimbe Fritanga Tortilla at 304 SW 8 Ave was cited for toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. So was Amici's Trattoria Italiana at 10201 Hammocks Blvd Suite 137, a Miami Italian restaurant that also drew a high-priority chemical violation this week.

Two facilities were cited under a slightly different but equally serious category: toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used. Shawarma Mediterranen Grill at 11752 SW 88th Street received that citation, as did Gualts The Italian Cafe at 201 S Biscayne Blvd Suite 101 in downtown Miami.

Outside Miami, KeysBite at 99000 Overseas Hwy in Key Largo was cited for improperly stored or labeled chemicals, one of two Keys-area restaurants flagged with high-priority violations this week.

Don Criollito at 12039 SW 132 Ct and Sushiato at 4261 NW 107 Ave in Doral both received chemical storage citations. Waffle House #2321 at 33190 S Dixie Hwy in Florida City rounded out the chemical violation list, making it the only chain location outside Miami proper on this week's roster.

The Undercooking Citations

Six restaurants were cited for failing to cook food to the required minimum internal temperature, a violation that state inspectors classify as high priority because it is a direct pathway for pathogens to reach a customer's plate.

P.F. Chang's China Bistro at 17455 Biscayne Blvd in Miami Beach was among them. The national chain location was cited for food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, a violation that at a full-service restaurant with a broad menu carries particular weight given the volume of dishes prepared each service.

El Centroamericano Restaurant II at 155 SW 107 Ave was also cited for undercooking. So was Old Lisbon at 5837-5843 Sunset Dr in South Miami, a Portuguese restaurant where the same citation appeared in this week's records.

Rinconcito Paisa 1 Restaurant at 15108 SW 72 St received the undercooking citation as well. In the Florida Keys, Starboard Restaurant and Bar at 200 William St in Key West was cited for the same violation, the southernmost facility on this week's list.

What These Violations Mean

The undercooking citations carry a specific biological risk. Salmonella in poultry survives at temperatures below 165 degrees Fahrenheit. When a kitchen serves poultry, pork, or ground meat that has not reached its required minimum internal temperature, any pathogens present in the raw protein remain alive and active. A customer who eats that food has no way of knowing it was undercooked, and illness can follow within hours or days. The six restaurants cited this week for undercooking violations, from P.F. Chang's in Miami Beach to Starboard Restaurant and Bar in Key West, each represent a documented instance where that standard was not met during an inspection.

The chemical violations carry a different but equally acute risk. When cleaning agents, sanitizers, or pesticides are stored without proper labels or placed near food preparation surfaces, the potential for contamination is direct. A mislabeled bottle of chemical cleaner can be mistaken for a food-safe product. A sanitizer stored above a prep table can drip into food. The nine facilities cited this week, including McDonald's of Doral West, Waffle House #2321, and Sushiato, were all flagged because inspectors found conditions where that kind of contamination was possible.

The distinction between "toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled" and "toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used" is one of degree and application. The second category, cited at Shawarma Mediterranen Grill and Gualts The Italian Cafe, encompasses a broader range of hazardous materials and includes the possibility that a substance was actively misused, not merely stored incorrectly.

Chemical poisoning from restaurant contamination is rare but not theoretical. It has caused mass illness events nationally when cleaning compounds have entered food or drink. The citations this week do not document that an exposure occurred, but they document that the conditions for one were present.

The Longer Record

The data this week includes facilities at very different points in their inspection histories, and that context matters. Amici's Trattoria Italiana and Gualts The Italian Cafe both carry inspection record identifiers in the high SEA2333000 range, suggesting they are relatively new to the state's inspection database. A high-priority chemical violation early in a facility's record is a different signal than the same violation appearing at a restaurant with decades of prior inspections.

Rinconcito Paisa 1 Restaurant, by contrast, carries the record identifier SEA2322350, placing it earlier in the inspection sequence and suggesting a longer operating and inspection history in the state system. The same is true of El Mayimbe Fritanga Tortilla, Old Lisbon, and El Centroamericano Restaurant II, all of which carry lower record numbers indicating they have accumulated more inspection history than the newer entries on this week's list.

KeysBite on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo and Starboard Restaurant and Bar in Key West represent the geographic outliers this week. Both Keys facilities drew high-priority violations in the same seven-day window, one for chemicals and one for undercooking, in a stretch of South Florida where restaurant density is lower and re-inspection logistics are more demanding than in Miami-Dade.

Waffle House #2321 in Florida City sits at the edge of the Miami metro, just north of the Keys corridor. It is a corporate chain location, and its chemical storage citation this week joins a list that otherwise consists almost entirely of independent restaurants. Whether the chain's internal compliance protocols address the conditions inspectors found this week is not reflected in the state record.
