FLORIDA. Thirty restaurants across Florida were ordered shut by state inspectors between September 21 and October 4, 2026, every one of them for live pest activity, in a two-week stretch that reached from a waterfront restaurant in Lantana to a golf club dining room in Daytona Beach to a national deli chain in Jacksonville.

Roach infestations drove 17 of the 30 emergency closures. Rodents accounted for 11 more. Flies or combined fly-and-roach activity triggered the remaining two as standalone grounds, with several others citing roaches and flies together. No city produced more closures than Marianna, a small Panhandle city of roughly 6,000 people that logged two emergency shutdowns in a single day.

Winghouse Bar and Grill on East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala was shut on September 25 for both live roach and fly activity. As of the data compiled for this report, its status remained unknown, meaning no reopening record had been filed with the state.

Nori Thai Restaurant on Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach was also closed for roach activity on September 23 with no reopening on record. St. Pete Beach sits along a stretch of Gulf Coast tourist corridor where a prolonged closure carries particular economic weight.

St. James Café on West Duval Street in Jacksonville was closed the same day for roach activity, also with no confirmed reopening in the state record.

The Roach Closures

The roach-related closures spread across the state's geography with no clear cluster beyond Marianna, where two restaurants were shut on the same day.

San Marcos Mexican Grill in Westside Plaza was closed September 24 for roach activity and cleared to reopen by 4:26 that afternoon. Bistro Palms on McPherson Street, two miles away, had been shut the day before for roaches and was back open by 10:22 a.m. on the 22nd.

Hive Waterfront Restaurant on Floral Road in Lantana was emergency-closed September 23 for both roach and rodent activity. It reopened at 9:00 a.m. the following morning. Meals by Chef B LLC on Lantana Road, also in Lantana, was closed the same day for roach activity alone and cleared by 2:36 p.m. on the 24th. Two closures in the same city within 24 hours placed Lantana alongside Marianna and Jacksonville in the top-city count for the period.

Tavern at Cheval on Cheval Boulevard in Lutz was closed September 24 for roaches and flies and cleared by 9:45 the next morning.

Bella's Italian Café on South Howard Street in Tampa was shut September 23 for roach and fly activity and reopened by 4:01 p.m. on the 24th.

China Lee on South Kirkman Road in Orlando was closed September 22 for roach activity and cleared by 10:17 a.m. the same morning.

Jason's Deli on Southside Boulevard in Jacksonville was closed September 21 for roach activity and reopened by 9:30 a.m. that day. Jason's Deli operates more than 250 locations nationally, making the closure one of the more recognizable chain names in this period's data.

La Pasadita on Northwest 6th Street in Gainesville was shut September 21 for both roach and rodent activity and cleared by 9:07 a.m.

Cuppasta in Oviedo Mall and Sonic #5080 on Gall Boulevard in Zephyrhills were both closed September 24. Sonic's closure combined roach and rodent activity; no URL was available in state records for either location. Sonic cleared by 3:14 p.m.

Bagelicious and More on County Line Road in Spring Hill was closed September 23 for roach and fly activity and reopened before 9:00 a.m. the following morning.

The Rodent Closures

Rodent-related closures showed the widest geographic spread of any pest category during the two weeks, reaching from Miami Beach to the Panhandle.

Montanas on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach was shut September 21 for rodent activity and cleared by 8:17 a.m. Ocean Drive is among the most visited restaurant corridors in Florida, and the early reopening time suggests the facility was ready before inspectors arrived for the follow-up.

LPGA International Golf Club on Champions Drive in Daytona Beach was closed the same day for rodent activity and cleared by 9:29 a.m. A golf club dining room sits in a category of venues where health inspection records are rarely the first thing a guest considers. The record here says otherwise.

Mel's Family Diner on South Orlando Drive in Sanford was also closed September 21 for rodent activity and reopened by 8:32 a.m.

Danny's Pizza Miami Style and Kelly's Cajun Grill, both located in the same Hialeah shopping center at 1635 and 1675 West 49th Street respectively, were both shut September 21 for rodent activity. Kelly's reopened by 10:24 a.m. and Danny's by 10:51. Two restaurants in adjacent suites, both closed for rodents on the same morning, points to a shared structural or environmental problem that neither tenant alone can resolve.

Blue Water Bay on State Road 26 in Melrose was closed September 21 for rodent activity and cleared by 10:38 a.m.

Triple J Tiki Hut Bar and Grill on West US Highway 92 in Seffner was shut September 23 for rodent activity and reopened by 2:27 p.m.

Discovery Indian Cuisine on US 19 in Palm Harbor and Pizzitalia's Clearwater on McMullen Booth Road were both closed September 22 for rodent activity, reopening at 12:01 p.m. and 10:46 a.m. respectively.

Asian Gourmet on North Harbor City Boulevard in Melbourne was closed September 24 for rodent activity and cleared by 9:22 a.m. Pelican Alley on West Albee Road in Nokomis was also shut September 24 for rodents and reopened by 8:35 a.m.

M Z Food To Go Inc on Lafayette Street in Fort Myers was closed September 21 for both roach and rodent activity and cleared by 2:55 p.m. No URL was available in state records.

Los Agaves Royal Palm LLC on Royal Palm Beach Boulevard was shut September 24 for roach and rodent activity combined and cleared by 2:50 p.m.

The two fly-only closures came from Shish Grill LLC on West Yamato Road in Boca Raton, closed September 22 and cleared by 12:56 p.m., and Mamma Rita's Pizzeria and Italian Grill on State Road 50 in Groveland, closed September 22 and reopened by 10:20 a.m.

What These Violations Mean

Live pest activity is not a paperwork violation. When inspectors order an emergency closure for roaches, rodents, or flies, it means they observed active infestation during the inspection, not evidence of a past problem that had been addressed.

Cockroaches are particularly dangerous in a food preparation environment because they travel between sewage areas, trash, and food surfaces continuously. They carry pathogens including Salmonella and E. coli on their legs and bodies, and they deposit those pathogens on every surface they cross. The roach closures documented here, at locations including Winghouse in Ocala, Bella's Italian Café in Tampa, and Jason's Deli in Jacksonville, each represent a documented moment when inspectors judged that contamination risk was too active to allow the restaurant to continue serving customers.

Rodent activity carries a different but equally serious risk. Rodents deposit droppings and urine across surfaces, inside food storage areas, and along the routes they travel inside a building. The closures at the two adjacent Hialeah restaurants, Danny's Pizza Miami Style and Kelly's Cajun Grill, illustrate the problem that pest control professionals consistently flag: rodents do not recognize suite boundaries. An infestation that originates in shared wall voids or a loading dock affects every tenant in the structure.

Fly activity as a standalone closure ground, the basis for the Shish Grill and Mamma Rita's closures, requires inspectors to observe flies in numbers and locations sufficient to constitute a direct food contamination risk. Flies that land on food surfaces or prepared food transfer pathogens on contact. The Locale Market closure in 2019 was driven by a similar finding. That both Shish Grill and Mamma Rita's cleared within hours suggests the fly activity was addressed quickly, but the emergency closure itself documents that inspectors found conditions serious enough to require it.

The Longer Record

The state inspection database assigns each licensed food service facility a cumulative inspection history. Several facilities in this two-week period carried records that placed the current closure in a longer context.

Hive Waterfront Restaurant in Lantana carries a facility identifier suggesting it is a relatively new entrant to the state system. The same is true of Los Agaves Royal Palm LLC and Shish Grill LLC, all of which have high-numbered SEA identifiers indicating recent licensing. A new facility that accumulates a pest-related emergency closure early in its operating history has a shorter runway before the state begins treating it as a pattern rather than an incident.

Jason's Deli in Jacksonville and Bella's Italian Café in Tampa both carry lower-numbered identifiers, placing them among facilities with longer operating histories in the state system. A roach closure at a location with a multi-year inspection record is a different kind of data point than the same closure at a new restaurant. It means the problem emerged, or was not caught, despite a track record that inspectors had been building for years.

The two Marianna closures on the same day deserve particular attention as a geographic fact. Marianna is a small city. Two emergency pest closures in the same 24-hour period in a community that size is not a coincidence of geography. It may reflect a shared seasonal or environmental pressure, or it may reflect the inspection schedule. Either way, the record now shows both San Marcos Mexican Grill and Bistro Palms carrying emergency closure dates within one calendar day of each other.

As of the data compiled for this report, Winghouse Bar and Grill in Ocala, Nori Thai Restaurant in St. Pete Beach, and St. James Café in Jacksonville had not filed reopening records with the state. All three were closed for roach activity. All three remained unresolved.
