DELRAY BEACH, FL. State inspectors ordered Amar Sandwich Shop at 522 E Atlantic Ave closed on July 17 after documenting rodent activity at the restaurant, giving the owners until July 18 to vacate the premises.
The closure was not the first. State records show Amar Sandwich Shop has now been emergency-closed twice in its 21-inspection history, a record that also includes 80 total violations across those visits.
What Inspectors Found

The July 17 inspection produced one high-severity violation and three intermediate violations. The high-severity finding, the one that triggered the shutdown order, was the rodent activity inspectors documented inside the facility.
Inspectors returned the following morning. The July 18 visit found zero high-severity violations and zero intermediate violations, and the shop was cleared to reopen. Records show the doors reopened at 10:28 a.m.
What This Means
Rodent activity inside a food service facility is treated as an emergency condition under Florida law because the risk is immediate and direct. Rodents move through a kitchen along surfaces where food is prepared and stored, leaving droppings, urine, and hair that contaminate whatever they touch. A customer eating a sandwich assembled on a surface a rodent crossed overnight has no way of knowing that contact occurred.
Beyond contamination of surfaces and food, rodents carry pathogens including Salmonella and Leptospira. Neither shows up on a plate. Neither has a taste.
That is why Florida inspectors are authorized to close a facility on the spot when they find evidence of rodent activity, without waiting for a follow-up visit or a correction window. The risk is not theoretical and it does not improve on its own between inspections.
The fact that the shop cleared its follow-up inspection in under 24 hours means the immediate hazard was addressed. It does not mean the conditions that allowed rodents access to the facility have been permanently corrected.
