SARASOTA COUNTY, FL. A Venice bar walked into the week's inspection records with 11 high-severity violations, including failures on parasite destruction, food cooking temperatures, and food in poor or adulterated condition, more high-severity citations than any other facility inspected in Sarasota County between September 30 and October 6, 2026.
Inspectors visited 47 times across 45 facilities during the week. Twelve of those facilities recorded two or more high-severity violations. The county's worst performers were spread from Venice to Nokomis to Sarasota's Bee Ridge Road corridor, and they included a retirement community kitchen, two country clubs, and a movie theater dining concept.
The Worst of the Week
Coach's Bar and Grill at 124 W Venice Ave collected a week's worth of violations that cut across nearly every category of food safety risk. Inspectors cited the bar for no employee health policy, improper handwashing technique, food in poor condition, inadequate shell stock identification, failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, food not cooked to required minimum temperatures, and improper use of time as a public health control. That is eight distinct high-severity violation types, plus three additional high-severity citations, in a single inspection.
The parasite destruction failure alone carries acute consequences. Fish served raw or undercooked must be frozen to specific temperatures for specific durations to kill parasites including Anisakis and tapeworm. Without documentation that those procedures were followed, there is no way to confirm the fish served to customers was safe.
Calusa Lakes Golf Club at 1995 Calusa Lakes Blvd in Nokomis drew six high-severity violations with no intermediate citations. Among the findings: no person in charge present or performing duties, no employee health policy, the same parasite destruction failure cited at Coach's, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and two separate violations for toxic chemicals, one for improper storage or labeling and one for improper identification, storage, or use of toxic substances. Two chemical-related high-severity violations at a golf club kitchen is not a minor administrative detail.
Thai-Licious Inc at 5755 Beneva Rd in Sarasota recorded six high-severity violations alongside two intermediate citations. Inspectors found an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, inadequate shell stock identification, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. The intermediate violations included improper sewage or wastewater disposal and inadequate cooling or cold-holding equipment. A facility with a sewage disposal problem and failing cold-holding equipment is operating with two simultaneous infrastructure failures.
Misty Creek Country Club at 8954 Misty Creek Dr in Sarasota produced six high-severity violations of its own. No person in charge. No employee health policy. An employee not reporting illness symptoms. Improper handwashing. Improperly cleaned food contact surfaces. Food not cooked to required minimum temperature. The country club's intermediate violation, like Thai-Licious, involved inadequate cooling or cold-holding equipment.
Tacos El Costeno 2 at 5769 Beneva Rd, one block from Thai-Licious, racked up five high-severity and five intermediate violations. The high-severity list included improper handwashing, inadequate shell stock identification, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, food not cooked to required temperature, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Inspectors also noted multi-use utensils not properly cleaned, inadequate cold-holding equipment, and single-use items being reused.
Seed and Bean Market at 116 W Venice Ave, steps from Coach's Bar and Grill on the same block, recorded five high-severity violations: no person in charge, no employee health policy, improper handwashing, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and food not cooked to required minimum temperature. An intermediate violation for improper sewage or wastewater disposal rounded out the inspection.
Selva Grill at 1345 Main St in downtown Sarasota drew four high-severity violations including an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, improper use of time as a public health control, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. A Main Street location in Sarasota's dining district with no consumer advisory means customers ordering raw preparations had no written notice of the risk.
China 1 at 3610 Bee Ridge Rd was cited for improper handwashing, inadequate shell stock identification, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, four high-severity violations, plus intermediate citations for multi-use utensils and inadequate ventilation and lighting.
Seaside Springs Retirement Community at 1251 S Tamiami Trail in Osprey recorded one high-severity violation for improperly cleaned food contact surfaces and an intermediate citation for improper sanitizing solution or procedures. The population served at a retirement community, elderly residents with compromised immune systems, makes even a single food contact surface violation a heightened concern.
Kitchen Social at 257 N Cattlemen Rd drew four high-severity violations: no person in charge, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing, and food in poor condition or adulterated. Laurel Oak Country Clubhouse at 2700 Gary Player Blvd recorded three high-severity violations including no person in charge, no employee health policy, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. CMX CineBistro Siesta Key at 3501 S Tamiami Trail was cited for no employee health policy, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, alongside intermediate violations for sewage disposal and multi-use utensils.
What These Violations Mean
The single most repeated high-severity violation this week across Sarasota County was improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, documented at Coach's Bar and Grill, Calusa Lakes Golf Club, Thai-Licious, Misty Creek Country Club, Tacos El Costeno 2, Seed and Bean Market, Selva Grill, China 1, Kitchen Social, and Seaside Springs. Cutting boards, prep surfaces, and equipment that are not properly cleaned and sanitized become direct transfer routes for bacteria between raw and ready-to-eat foods. A surface that looks clean can carry a bacterial load sufficient to cause illness.
The cluster of employee illness reporting failures is more acute. Misty Creek Country Club, Thai-Licious, Selva Grill, Kitchen Social, and CMX CineBistro all had violations for employees either not reporting symptoms of illness or no written health policy requiring them to do so. Norovirus, the most common cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in restaurant settings, spreads through exactly this gap: a sick worker who has no formal obligation to report symptoms and no written policy telling them to stay home.
Parasite destruction failures at Coach's Bar and Grill and Calusa Lakes Golf Club mean fish dishes may have been served without any verified kill step for parasites. The procedures exist specifically because certain parasites survive light cooking. Without documented freezing records or equivalent controls, there is no way after the fact to determine whether fish served during the inspection period was safe.
The toxic chemical violations at Calusa Lakes, Thai-Licious, China 1, and CMX CineBistro represent a separate and immediate risk. Chemicals stored near or above food, or unlabeled, can contaminate food through spills or mislabeling. Unlike bacterial contamination, chemical poisoning does not require time or temperature to develop.
The Longer Record
The data does not include prior inspection counts for the facilities cited this week, which limits the ability to place individual records in full historical context. What the current week's findings do establish is a pattern of co-occurring violations that suggests systemic gaps rather than isolated incidents.
Four of the twelve facilities with two or more high-severity violations were cited simultaneously for no person in charge and at least one additional employee behavior violation, whether handwashing technique, illness reporting, or health policy. That combination, absent management and absent employee training, is exactly the condition CDC research identifies as producing three times more critical violations than facilities with active managerial control. Calusa Lakes Golf Club, Misty Creek Country Club, Seed and Bean Market, and Kitchen Social all fit that profile this week.
The Beneva Road corridor in Sarasota produced two of the week's worst performers within a single block of each other. Thai-Licious at 5755 Beneva and Tacos El Costeno 2 at 5769 Beneva together generated 11 high-severity violations and 7 intermediate citations. Both were cited for inadequate cold-holding equipment, a shared infrastructure failure in the same stretch of road.
Selva Grill on Main Street, one of Sarasota's most visible dining corridors, was operating without a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods at the time of inspection. Customers who ordered raw preparations during that period had no written notice that the food carried an elevated risk.
