NORTH MIAMI, FL. A Popeyes location on NW 7th Avenue was found to be serving food from an unapproved or unknown source during a state inspection last month, a violation that means there is no way to trace where that food came from if a customer gets sick.
That was one of nine high-severity violations inspectors documented at Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken 8 at 12100 NW 7 Ave on September 23, 2026. The restaurant was not emergency-closed.
What Inspectors Found
The nine high-severity citations covered nearly every major food safety category. Inspectors cited the restaurant for employees not reporting illness symptoms, improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and two separate violations involving toxic chemicals, one for improper storage or labeling and a second for improper identification, storage, or use.
The remaining high-severity violations included failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked foods, and inadequate shell stock identification records. That last citation is unusual for a fried chicken chain, which does not typically handle shellfish.
Five intermediate violations accompanied the nine high-severity findings. Inspectors noted inadequate cooling and cold holding equipment, single-use items being reused, improper use of wiping cloths, inadequate ventilation and lighting, and equipment in poor repair.
What These Violations Mean
The unapproved food source citation is among the most serious findings in any restaurant inspection. When food enters a kitchen from an unknown or uninspected supplier, there is no chain of documentation connecting that product to a USDA or FDA inspection. If a customer gets sick, investigators have nowhere to start.
The employee illness reporting failure compounds that risk directly. Norovirus, the leading cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States, spreads most efficiently through food handlers who work while symptomatic. A single infected employee preparing chicken at a busy fast-food counter can expose dozens of customers in a single shift.
The two chemical violations together describe a kitchen where toxic substances were stored or labeled in ways that created a direct risk of contamination. A cleaning product stored near food, or a chemical in an unlabeled container, can end up in a customer's meal without anyone in the kitchen realizing it.
Improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, the sixth high-severity citation, are what inspectors call a primary cross-contamination vehicle. Surfaces that look clean but have not been properly sanitized transfer bacteria from one food to the next. Combined with the inadequate cooling equipment noted in the intermediate violations, the inspection describes a kitchen where temperature control and surface hygiene were both compromised on the same day.
The Longer Record
The September 2026 inspection was the 22nd on record for this location. Across those inspections, the facility has accumulated 123 total violations. It has never been emergency-closed.
The prior inspection history shows the September findings were not an isolated bad day. The location drew three high-severity violations in October 2025 and another three in March 2023. The March 2023 inspection also produced four intermediate violations, the second-highest intermediate count before this month's five.
Two inspections in 2024, one in August and one in February 2028, each produced high-severity citations. The February 2026 inspection, just seven months before September's nine-violation visit, showed zero high-severity violations and only two intermediate ones. That improvement did not hold.
The pattern across eight documented prior inspections is one of recurring high-severity findings without escalation to closure. The September 2026 inspection, with nine high-severity violations, is the worst single inspection this location has produced in the available record.
Open for Business
State inspectors have the authority to order an emergency closure when conditions pose an immediate threat to public health. Nine high-severity violations at a single inspection did not meet that threshold here.
The restaurant at 12100 NW 7 Ave remained open on September 23, 2026, and continued serving customers after inspectors left.
