GAINESVILLE, FL. No one at One Love Cafe on NW 40th Place could demonstrate allergen awareness to a state inspector on August 25, a finding that puts every customer with a food allergy at direct, unwarned risk.

That was one of six high-severity violations documented during the inspection. The restaurant remained open.

The inspector cited the cafe for no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked foods, a violation that specifically affects elderly customers, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems who may not know they are ordering something that carries elevated risk.

Shell stock records were also inadequate. The cafe serves shellfish, and without proper identification tags and receiving records, there is no way to trace oysters, clams, or mussels back to their source if a customer gets sick.

Food contact surfaces were not properly cleaned or sanitized. Inspectors also found that employees were not reporting illness symptoms, and that no qualified person in charge was present or performing supervisory duties at the time of the visit.

Four intermediate violations accompanied the six high-severity findings: improper sewage or wastewater disposal, inadequate ventilation and lighting, improper use of wiping cloths, and inadequate or improperly maintained toilet facilities.

What These Violations Mean

The allergen violation is the one with the most immediate consequence for a specific category of customer. Food allergies affect 32 million Americans, and allergic reactions send roughly 30,000 people to emergency rooms every year. When kitchen staff cannot demonstrate basic allergen awareness, a customer with a peanut, shellfish, or dairy allergy has no reliable safeguard between their order and a medical emergency.

The illness-reporting failure compounds that risk in a different direction. Food workers who do not report symptoms are the leading cause of multi-victim outbreaks. Norovirus, which spreads through contaminated hands and surfaces, can move from a single sick employee to dozens of customers in a single service period. The absence of a person in charge actively performing oversight duties means neither of these failures was being caught in real time.

The shell stock traceability violation matters most after the fact. If a customer develops a gastrointestinal illness after eating shellfish at One Love Cafe, investigators would have no sourcing records to work backward from. Shellfish are consumed raw or lightly cooked, and without harvest tags and receiving documentation, the point of contamination cannot be established.

Improperly sanitized food contact surfaces tie it together. Cutting boards, prep surfaces, and utensils that carry residual bacteria from one food to the next are a primary vehicle for cross-contamination. Combined with an unsupervised kitchen and employees who may be working through illness, the cumulative risk picture from this single inspection is significant.

The Longer Record

One Love Cafe: Recent Inspection History

2026-08-256 high, 4 intermediate violations. Facility remained open.
2025-12-306 high, 2 intermediate violations.
2025-07-258 high, 3 intermediate violations.
2025-04-220 high, 0 intermediate violations.
2025-02-198 high, 3 intermediate violations.
2024-12-059 high, 1 intermediate violations. Emergency closure for roach activity.
2023-09-14Emergency closure for roach activity. Reopened 2023-09-16.

The August 25 inspection is not an anomaly. State records show 39 inspections on file for One Love Cafe, with 263 total violations accumulated across that history.

The cafe was emergency-closed on December 5, 2024, for roach activity. Inspectors documented nine high-severity violations that day. It reopened two days later after a follow-up inspection. The same pattern played out in September 2023, when roach activity triggered another emergency closure, with the cafe again reopening within two days.

Between those two closures, and after the most recent one, the violation counts have remained high on most visits. The February 2025 inspection found eight high-severity violations. The July 2025 inspection found eight more. The December 2025 inspection found six.

The cafe did pass cleanly in April 2025, with zero high-severity and zero intermediate violations. That visit stands as the exception in a record that otherwise shows a kitchen cycling between brief periods of compliance and repeated serious citations.

Still Open
