FORT MYERS, FL. A Dunkin' on Palm Beach Boulevard drew five high-severity violations during the week of July 4, including citations for food from unapproved sources and a failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, two of the most serious findings inspectors can document in a food service establishment.

That Dunkin' location was one of 13 Fort Myers restaurants cited for high-severity violations between July 4 and July 10, 2026. The week's findings ranged from toxic chemicals stored near food to employees with no training in allergen awareness, at locations spanning fast food, chain sit-down restaurants, and neighborhood sports bars.

The Dunkin' violations included improper hand and arm washing technique, an employee not reporting symptoms of illness, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized. The citation for inadequate cooling equipment rounded out the intermediate findings, meaning the location lacked the mechanical capacity to keep food at safe temperatures.

El Estadio Latin Sports Bar on South Cleveland Avenue matched the Dunkin' tally with five high-severity violations. Inspectors cited the bar for toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. They also documented inadequate toilet facilities and improper sewage or wastewater disposal.

Citrola's on College Parkway also drew five high-severity citations. The violations included food from an unapproved or unknown source, food found in poor condition or adulterated, and a failure to properly use time as a public health control. Inspectors also noted inadequate handwashing by food employees and an employee not reporting symptoms of illness.

Fortune Cookie on Palm Beach Boulevard accumulated four high-severity violations and six intermediate ones, the highest intermediate count of any facility this week. Among the serious findings: no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, no employee health policy, improper hand and arm washing technique, and food contact surfaces not properly cleaned. Inspectors also noted improper sanitizing solution or procedures and improper sewage disposal.

Mytho's Authentic Greek Cuisine on McGregor Boulevard was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source, improper hand and arm washing technique, and a failure to properly use time as a public health control. The location also had inadequate ventilation and improper sewage disposal among its intermediate findings.

P.F. Chang's China Bistro on Gulf Center Drive drew three high-severity violations: improper hand and arm washing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and toxic chemicals improperly stored or labeled. Inspectors also noted single-use items being improperly reused.

Pizza Pub on Winkler Road was cited for no employee health policy, an employee not reporting symptoms of illness, and inadequate shell stock identification records. The shellfish traceability citation is significant: without proper tagging records, there is no way to trace an oyster or clam back to its harvest bed if customers become ill.

Lucky China Wok on Gladious Drive received three high-severity violations including food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, improper hand and arm washing technique, and a failure to use time as a public health control. Multi-use utensils not properly cleaned rounded out the intermediate findings.

GelaToGo Fort Myers on McGregor Boulevard had no intermediate violations but drew three high-severity citations: no employee health policy, no allergen awareness demonstrated, and required procedures for specialized processes not followed. For a gelato shop, that last citation raises questions about whether dairy-based preparations involving reduced-oxygen or fermentation processes are being handled according to state-approved protocols.

El Caribe Latin Flavor Restaurant on Palm Beach Boulevard was cited for no employee health policy and improper hand and arm washing technique, along with inadequate ventilation and improper use of wiping cloths.

La Casita on McGregor Boulevard drew two high-severity violations: inadequate shell stock identification records and a failure to follow parasite destruction procedures. Both citations involve seafood handling and together indicate that fish or shellfish at the location may be served without the safeguards required to eliminate parasites or verify safe harvest origins.

BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse on University Plaza Drive was cited for improper hand and arm washing technique and toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used, a violation that signals chemical contamination risk in a food preparation environment.

Rondao's Pizzaria and Sports Bar on McGregor Boulevard drew a citation for person in charge not present or not performing duties, alongside an employee not reporting symptoms of illness. When management is absent or disengaged, inspectors consistently find more critical violations throughout a facility.

What These Violations Mean

The most common high-severity violation this week was improper hand and arm washing technique, cited at Dunkin', El Estadio, Citrola's, Fortune Cookie, Mytho's, P.F. Chang's, Lucky China Wok, El Caribe, and BJ's. This is not the same as failing to wash hands at all. It means employees made a washing attempt but used a technique that leaves pathogens on skin, including skipping soap, rinsing too briefly, or not scrubbing between fingers. The result is that bacteria travel from hands to food even when a worker believes they have washed.

The food-from-unapproved-sources violation, documented at Dunkin', Citrola's, and Mytho's, matters because of what happens after someone gets sick. Food purchased through approved suppliers is traceable: inspectors can identify the source, the harvest date, and other customers who received the same product. Food from unapproved sources has no such trail, and may have bypassed USDA or FDA inspection entirely.

The allergen awareness violations at El Estadio and GelaToGo are acute risks in a specific population. Food allergies trigger roughly 30,000 emergency room visits annually in the United States. When staff cannot identify allergens in menu items, customers who ask whether a dish contains tree nuts, shellfish, or dairy are receiving unreliable answers. At a gelato shop, where milk proteins are foundational ingredients, that gap is particularly direct.

The parasite destruction failures at Dunkin' and La Casita involve a step that cannot be observed on the plate. Proper freezing or cooking protocols are the only consumer protection against Anisakis in fish or Trichinella in pork. When a facility skips or improperly executes those protocols, the hazard arrives at the table invisibly.

The Longer Record

Several of this week's facilities carry long inspection histories that place the current findings in sharper context. El Caribe Latin Flavor Restaurant has 33 prior inspections on record, the highest count among this week's violators. Pizza Pub and Rondao's each have 31. La Casita has 32. Fortune Cookie, P.F. Chang's, and BJ's each have 30 prior inspections. That these facilities are still accumulating high-severity violations after three or more decades of combined inspection activity is the most direct measure of whether prior citations produced lasting change.

El Estadio Latin Sports Bar has 29 prior inspections and this week produced five high-severity violations, including the toxic chemicals finding. Citrola's has 28 prior inspections and also drew five high-severity violations. Mytho's and Lucky China Wok each have 25. The Dunkin' on Palm Beach Boulevard, with 15 prior inspections, has a shorter record but produced the broadest combination of serious violation types this week, spanning food sourcing, parasite control, handwashing, surface sanitation, and illness reporting.

GelaToGo is the newest facility in the group, with only 7 prior inspections on record. All three of its violations this week were high-severity. A new location accumulating serious citations this early in its inspection history, particularly around allergen awareness and specialized process protocols, is a pattern inspectors typically flag for close follow-up.

Rondao's Pizzaria and Sports Bar, with 31 prior inspections, drew a person-in-charge violation this week. That citation, combined with the illness-reporting failure at the same location, leaves open the question of who, if anyone, was actively overseeing food safety practices during the inspection visit.
