FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. Inspectors cited La Birra Bar on East Oakland Park Boulevard for six high-severity violations during the week of September 10, the worst single-facility tally in Fort Lauderdale for the period, including food not cooked to the required minimum temperature and food found in poor condition or adulterated.
The bar also drew citations for improper handwashing technique, an employee not reporting symptoms of illness, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned or sanitized, and inadequate shellfish traceability records. Six high-severity violations, zero intermediate ones. That combination, no paperwork failures and no minor procedural gaps, only the violations that carry the most direct risk to customers, made La Birra one of the more striking records of the week.
Eleven Fort Lauderdale restaurants in total drew high-severity violations between September 10 and September 16.
What Inspectors Found
Emily's Garden on SW 2nd Street drew three high-severity violations and four intermediate ones, the highest combined total of the week. The high-severity findings included no written employee health policy, an employee not reporting illness symptoms, and improper handwashing technique. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for improper sewage or wastewater disposal, improperly used wiping cloths, multi-use utensils not properly cleaned, and inadequate toilet facilities.
Plumbbob Cafe on NW 6 Way matched Emily's Garden's high-severity count with three, including an employee not reporting illness symptoms, food found in poor condition or adulterated, and a citation for time not being properly used as a public health control. The cafe also had improper sewage disposal, unclean multi-use utensils, and improperly used wiping cloths on the intermediate side.
Beach House Las Olas on South Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard collected three high-severity violations of a different character. Inspectors found inadequate shellfish identification records, a failure to follow parasite destruction procedures for fish, and an employee not reporting illness symptoms. The parasite destruction citation is notable at a beachfront restaurant where raw or lightly prepared fish is a menu staple.
Cafe Vico Inc on North Federal Highway was cited for two high-severity violations: no person in charge present or performing duties, and no written employee health policy. Three intermediate violations followed, including improper sewage disposal and inadequate toilet facilities.
The person-in-charge violation also appeared at Sonesta Fort Lauderdale's Steel Pan restaurant on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, alongside a missing consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. The hotel restaurant drew two intermediate citations as well, for improperly reused single-use items and inadequate ventilation and lighting.
Heritage Restaurant on NE 5th Avenue drew one of the more serious sourcing violations of the week: food from an unapproved or unknown source. That citation was paired with a missing consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods and two intermediate violations for unclean utensils and inadequate toilet facilities.
Arby's at 924 NW 62nd Street had two high-severity violations, both of them notable for a fast-food location: inadequate shellfish identification records and a missing consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Neither citation is typical for a chain burger-and-sandwich restaurant.
Chipotle Mexican Grill on West Broward Boulevard was cited for an employee not reporting illness symptoms and inadequate handwashing by food employees. No intermediate violations were recorded.
JB&C Fort Lauderdale on North Flagler Drive drew citations for improper hand and arm washing technique and a missing consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Si Buenas Cafe on NE 13th Street was cited for the same two categories: an employee not reporting illness symptoms and a missing consumer advisory.
What These Violations Mean
The illness-reporting failures documented this week at La Birra Bar, Emily's Garden, Plumbbob Cafe, Beach House Las Olas, Chipotle, and Si Buenas Cafe represent the most direct transmission risk in food service. A single worker with norovirus who handles food during a shift can expose every customer served that day. The citation means inspectors found no evidence the worker reported symptoms, and in Emily's Garden's case, no written policy existed requiring them to do so.
Handwashing violations, documented at La Birra Bar, Emily's Garden, JB&C, and Chipotle, are not procedural footnotes. Improper technique, meaning an attempt was made but done incorrectly, leaves viable pathogens on hands even after the sink was used. At La Birra Bar, that citation appeared alongside a food contact surfaces violation, meaning contaminated hands and contaminated prep surfaces were both present in the same inspection.
Heritage Restaurant's unapproved food source citation carries a specific consequence that separates it from most other violations: if a customer gets sick, there is no traceable supply chain. Food from approved sources is inspected and documented at every step. Food from an unknown or unapproved source bypasses that system entirely, and an illness investigation has nowhere to begin.
The parasite destruction failure at Beach House Las Olas means fish served there may not have undergone the freezing or cooking process required to kill parasites including Anisakis. That risk is concentrated among customers who order raw or lightly cooked preparations, and the restaurant was also missing the consumer advisory that would allow those customers to make an informed choice.
The Longer Record
Cafe Vico Inc carries the longest inspection history of any facility cited this week, with 32 prior inspections on record. This week's findings, including no person in charge and no employee health policy, are management-level failures. A restaurant with three dozen inspections behind it and still no written health policy is not dealing with a new compliance gap.
Emily's Garden has 28 prior inspections and produced the week's highest combined violation total, seven citations across high-severity and intermediate categories. The sewage disposal and toilet facility violations at Emily's Garden are infrastructure-level problems that suggest deferred maintenance rather than a single oversight.
Beach House Las Olas has 26 prior inspections. Sonesta's Steel Pan has 24, and both Chipotle and JB&C have 22 each. Heritage Restaurant has 19. These are not facilities encountering state inspectors for the first time.
Si Buenas Cafe, by contrast, has only 2 prior inspections on record, making it one of the newest facilities on this week's list. Two high-severity violations in the early stages of a restaurant's inspection history, including a missing consumer advisory and an illness-reporting failure, is a pattern worth watching as the cafe accumulates more visits.
Plumbbob Cafe has 6 prior inspections and La Birra Bar has 8. La Birra's six high-severity violations this week, on a record that still has fewer than ten inspections total, means a significant share of its documented history involves the most serious violation tier.
Unresolved
Heritage Restaurant's food sourcing citation remained in the record at week's end with no indication in the inspection data of where the unapproved food originated or whether it had already been served to customers.
