PALM BAY, FL. Inspectors visiting Bizzarro Pizzeria at 1150 Malabar Road SE on July 20 found the restaurant was serving food from unapproved or unknown sources, a violation that means the ingredients on customers' plates had bypassed every federal safety checkpoint designed to catch Listeria, Salmonella, and other pathogens before they reach a dining room.
That was one of eight high-severity violations documented that day. The restaurant was not closed.
What Inspectors Found
The food sourcing violation was not the only finding that pointed to systemic failure. Inspectors also cited the restaurant for not following parasite destruction procedures, a requirement that applies to fish and certain other proteins served raw or undercooked. When those freezing or cooking steps are skipped, parasites including Anisakis in fish and Trichinella in pork can survive and infect customers.
Employees were found not reporting illness symptoms, and handwashing technique was documented as improper. Both violations involve the same basic pathway: a sick or contaminated worker's hands reaching food.
Two separate chemical violations appeared on the same report. Toxic chemicals were found improperly stored or labeled, and toxic substances were cited for improper identification, storage, or use. Food contact surfaces were not properly cleaned or sanitized. The restaurant was also missing a consumer advisory for raw or undercooked items, meaning customers with compromised immune systems had no notice that any menu item carried elevated risk.
The intermediate violations covered improper sewage or wastewater disposal and improper sanitizing solution or procedures.
What These Violations Mean
The food from unapproved sources violation carries a specific consequence that goes beyond the ingredients themselves. When food enters a kitchen outside the regulated supply chain, there is no traceability. If a customer gets sick, investigators cannot pull records to identify the lot, the processor, or the distribution route. The outbreak investigation starts from zero.
The parasite destruction failure compounds that risk for anyone who ordered a fish dish. Anisakis, a roundworm found in raw or undercooked fish, causes severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and in some cases requires surgical removal. The required safeguard is straightforward: freeze the fish to a specified temperature for a specified period before serving it undercooked. Skipping that step removes the only reliable barrier between the parasite and the customer.
The illness reporting violation is the one that public health officials describe as the single largest driver of multi-victim outbreaks. Norovirus spreads with particular efficiency from a sick food worker to dozens of customers in a single shift. The reporting requirement exists precisely because a worker who does not know they are required to disclose symptoms will often continue working. Improper handwashing technique means that even workers who attempt to wash their hands may leave pathogens behind.
Two chemical violations in the same inspection is unusual. Improperly stored or unlabeled chemicals near food preparation areas create a contamination risk that is acute and immediate, not cumulative. Mislabeled chemicals have been the cause of mass poisoning events at food service facilities when staff mistake a cleaning agent for a food-safe product.
The Longer Record
Bizzarro Pizzeria: Inspection Pattern Since 2023
The July 2026 inspection was the 33rd on record for this location. Across those 33 inspections, the facility has accumulated 380 total violations.
Of the eight most recent inspections for which violation-level data is available, seven produced five or more high-severity citations. The single exception was December 2025, when inspectors found zero high-severity violations. That result stands alone in a three-year pattern otherwise defined by repeated high-severity findings.
The August 2024 inspection produced 11 high-severity violations, the steepest single-visit total in the recent record. The facility was not emergency-closed after that inspection either. In fact, across 33 inspections and 380 violations, Bizzarro Pizzeria has never been issued an emergency closure order.
The July 20 inspection found food from an unapproved source, parasites potentially surviving in fish being served to customers, sick employees not disclosing their illness, improperly stored chemicals near food, and surfaces that were not properly sanitized. As of the inspection date, the restaurant remained open for business.
