FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. The kitchen at 17th Street Hotel Operations on SE 17th Street drew eight high-severity violations in a single inspection this week, the highest count of any facility inspectors visited in Fort Lauderdale between September 12 and September 18, 2026. Among the citations: toxic substances improperly identified, stored, or used; no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff; no consumer advisory posted for raw or undercooked foods; and inadequate records to trace shellfish back to their source.
Not one intermediate violation appeared on the report. Every citation was high-severity.
The Violations
Tiki Beach Cafe on Galt Ocean Drive collected seven high-severity violations alongside four intermediate ones, the broadest combined total of any facility inspected this week. Inspectors cited inadequate handwashing facilities, employees not reporting illness symptoms, improper hand-washing technique, no shellfish traceability records, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and toxic chemicals stored or labeled incorrectly. The fourth intermediate violation involved improper sewage or wastewater disposal.
Coconuts Bahama Grill Pro Dive on Seabreeze Boulevard also drew seven high-severity violations. Two stand out. Inspectors cited food from an unapproved or unknown source, meaning some ingredient arrived without passing through a USDA or FDA-inspected supply chain. They also cited failure to follow parasite destruction procedures, which means fish or other parasite-risk proteins were not properly frozen or cooked before being served to customers.
SoHo Kitchen on North Federal Highway was cited for food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, a direct pathway for Salmonella and similar pathogens to survive and reach a customer's plate. Inspectors also noted that time as a public health control was not properly used, meaning food sat in the temperature danger zone longer than the records could account for.
Tryp by Wyndham Maritine Hotel on State Road 84 drew the same two cooking-temperature citations as SoHo Kitchen, plus inadequate shellfish records and employees not reporting illness symptoms. Inspectors also found multi-use utensils not properly cleaned and equipment in poor repair.
Con Murphy's on Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard was cited for inadequate handwashing facilities, improper handwashing technique, food contact surfaces not properly cleaned, and no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods. Inspectors also noted inadequate ventilation and lighting as an intermediate violation.
Chima Steakhouse on Las Olas Boulevard drew citations for food from an unapproved or unknown source and food not cooked to the required minimum temperature. The facility also lacked an adequate employee health policy and showed improper sewage or wastewater disposal, inadequate ventilation, and improperly maintained toilet facilities.
The Cheesecake Factory on East Las Olas Boulevard was cited for food from an unapproved or unknown source, food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, and improper handwashing technique. Three high-severity violations at one of the busiest dining destinations on Las Olas.
Holiday Inn Express Cruise Airport on SE 17th Street Causeway drew four high-severity citations, including food in poor condition, mislabeled, or adulterated, and food not cooked to the required minimum temperature.
Mangal Fort Lauderdale on West Broward Boulevard was cited for food not cooked to the required minimum temperature, inadequate shellfish records, improperly cleaned food contact surfaces, and employees not reporting illness symptoms.
Pollo Tropical No. 35 on South Federal Highway drew citations for food from an unapproved or unknown source, inadequate shellfish traceability records, no consumer advisory for raw or undercooked foods, and employees not reporting illness symptoms.
Delicias Chapinas Restaurant on Davie Boulevard was cited for no person in charge present or performing duties, food in poor condition or adulterated, improper sewage disposal, and improperly maintained toilet facilities.
Sofi's Cafe on East Broward Boulevard drew three high-severity citations, including no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. The other two were employees not reporting illness symptoms and improper handwashing technique.
Vale Food Company on North Federal Highway and Wicked Cheesesteaks Pizza and Steaks on North Federal Highway each received fewer total citations. Vale Food Company was cited for inadequate handwashing by food employees and improperly cleaned food contact surfaces. Wicked Cheesesteaks drew a single high-severity citation for employees not reporting illness symptoms.
What These Violations Mean
The illness-reporting and handwashing violations that appeared at more than a dozen facilities this week are not paperwork problems. Food workers who do not report symptoms of illness are the primary driver of multi-victim outbreaks, because Norovirus and similar pathogens spread through direct food handling before a worker knows they are contagious. That citation appeared at 17th Street Hotel Operations, Tiki Beach Cafe, Coconuts Bahama Grill, Con Murphy's, Tryp by Wyndham, Mangal, Pollo Tropical, SoHo Kitchen, Holiday Inn Express, and Sofi's Cafe.
The food-from-unapproved-source citations at Coconuts Bahama Grill, Chima Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory, and Pollo Tropical carry a specific consequence: if a customer gets sick, investigators cannot trace the ingredient back through the supply chain to its origin. That traceability gap is what turns a contained food-safety incident into an unsolvable outbreak.
Parasite destruction procedures not followed, cited at Coconuts Bahama Grill, means that fish or other parasite-risk proteins were not subjected to the freezing or cooking regimen required to kill parasites including Anisakis and tapeworm before being served. That violation requires an active step to be skipped, not simply overlooked.
The undercooking citations at SoHo Kitchen, Tryp by Wyndham, Chima Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory, Mangal, and Holiday Inn Express all point to the same mechanism: Salmonella in poultry survives below 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and E. coli in ground beef survives below 155 degrees. When a kitchen does not reach those temperatures, the bacteria reach the customer.
The Longer Record
Tiki Beach Cafe has 36 prior inspections on record, the longest history of any facility cited this week, and this visit produced the broadest combined violation total of the week: seven high-severity and four intermediate. Chima Steakhouse and Vale Food Company each carry 35 prior inspections. Neither is a new or untested operation. Chima drew citations this week for unapproved food sourcing and undercooking at a Las Olas steakhouse with more than three decades of inspection history.
Coconuts Bahama Grill on Seabreeze has 34 prior inspections behind it and drew seven high-severity violations this week, including the parasite destruction failure and the unapproved food source citation. Cheesecake Factory has 32 inspections on record. Wicked Cheesesteaks has 30. These are not facilities encountering inspectors for the first time.
SoHo Kitchen stands apart at the other end of the scale. It has only four prior inspections on record, making it one of the newest operations in this week's data. It already drew five high-severity violations, including food not cooked to temperature and improper sewage disposal. Holiday Inn Express Cruise Airport, with 11 inspections on record, also sits toward the newer end of the dataset and collected four high-severity citations.
The shellfish traceability violation appeared at six facilities this week: 17th Street Hotel Operations, Tiki Beach Cafe, Coconuts Bahama Grill, Tryp by Wyndham, Mangal, and Pollo Tropical. Shellfish records are required precisely because oysters, clams, and mussels are routinely consumed raw, and without a tag linking each batch to its harvest site, a hepatitis A or Vibrio outbreak cannot be traced to its source. Six facilities serving Fort Lauderdale's waterfront and hotel dining market could not produce those records during the same inspection week.
Sofi's Cafe, with 22 inspections on its record, drew a citation for no allergen awareness demonstrated by staff. Thirty thousand Americans visit emergency rooms each year for allergic reactions to food. A customer with a severe allergy who asks about an ingredient at Sofi's Cafe this week had no guarantee that the person answering knew the answer.
